Design education in elementary school and middle school of China, have a subordinate status in the fine arts education. The significance and value of it was dismissed for a long time. With the process of curriculum reform and renewal of education idea, the conditions of design education become better. But it is necessary to develop its function in elementary education for future development and society progress. In the process of investigating the essence of design art development through current curriculum idea, design education in general middle school presents increasingly remarkable and complete educational value and the superiority of comprehensive curriculum. Combining unceasing deepening of foundation fin arts education curriculum reform, therefore, it is essential to commence the research on design education in general middle school. The research on design education in this thesis, included in fine art education of curriculum project in middle school, relate to the significance, characteristic and direction of education, curriculum construction, strategy in course actualization and so on.There are four parts in this thesis. In the first chapter, curriculum value and the function of design education in middle school was discussed. The conclusion deduced from background inspection, contrastive analysis and investigation interview was design education at middle school level and general fine arts education stay peacefully while holding different opinions. Based on present curriculum reform tendency and contemporary reform idea of fine arts course in China and foreign countries, thus, the viewpoint, enhancement of design education in fine arts education should change drawing-oriented fine arts education was proposed. And several typical aspects such as educational values and the curriculum superiority of middle school design education were elaborated illustrated.In the second chapter, the historical development of design education in middle school of China was investigated. The development of China design education in middle school was divided into five stages through various analyses on cultural background, title evolvement, teaching idea, the curriculum summary, and course content and so on. The five stages were realistic beginning, growth stage, marginalization stage, resuming growth stage and modern design education reforming stage.Essential directions of modern design education were proposal in the third part. These directions took the core idea of curriculum reform as basis and the strategy of design education future development as aim. The proposal was according to historical development of design education in secondary school and study of experience from overseas, traditional culture analysis and teachers conditions. Following the directions was a good opportunity to seize for the reforming process.In the forth section, several representative and critical target direction such as detailed condition analysis, plan strategy, curriculum project and the teaching suggestion were presented. These target direction focus on Comprehensive Innovation, Emotional solace, design ethics and the lasting interest and so on.To summary the thesis, in conclusion, forecast was made on feasibility of curriculum construction and teaching.
