The existence of modern universities is consideration-consuming, while the solution of it lies in the society of contemporary features. The procedures of contemporary features are closely related to the development, changes, division and re-establishment of universities. From the ancient time on, universities have been the demonstration of the existence of human society, which is more obvious in modern society. To some extends the state of knowledge, scientific research and theoretical achievement in universities make a solid foundation for the development of industrial society. Contemporarily, however, especially since 1950s, none of great progresses and reform have had no relationship with universities. Yet, till today the conflict and perversity of human society have gradually appeared and bothered the existence and development of human beings. This phenomenon is called contemporary crisis theoretically. Our problem is: how is the existence of universities in society with contemporary features? What crisis and challenges does it face? Can universities save themselves to save the society and how? With what concept and strategy will the universities get out of the crisis? Based on the unity principle of the history and logic, the author historically illustrates two contents of modernization procedure and achievements of universities in contemporary features, which are the first two parts of the essay. Through the description of the improvement of universities in China and abroad and changes of the concept of universities, taking the universities concept development as the logical clue, the author give a thorough realization on university concept to testify the unity of history and logic. The primary meaningful point of this two parts lies in the historical sense while thinking about the existence of modern universities. From the author's point of view, it is the very historical sense that college education is lack of. Because we over-estimate the power of modernization, we march too far on the west-oriented way. The achievement of contemporary features is very obvious, especially in universities. No one of us does not benefit from the modernization and meanwhile, each of us is regulated by modernization. This is exactly the human perversity. The essay is composed by six parts, which includes four parts except for the introduction and conclusion: The introduction of it makes a summary illustration on the origin, topic meaning, document analysis and concept definition. Through the description of established theories, the author thinks that the theoretical formulation nowadays mainly stays on the stage of the study of classical universities, taking the Harvard University in United States, Cambridge University in Britain and Qing Hua University in China as the researching objectives, which is lack of the insight of the real states of contemporary universities. So the author makes a broad inclusion on the universities in this essay: universities with qualification and standards of training under-graduates. In order to analyze the crisis of contemporary universities, the author illustrates the beginning, developing and the changing of concepts of universities along the historical routes in Part Two and Part Three of the essay. The author thinks that the crisis of contemporary universities lies in the five aspects: quantity enlargement and quality improvement, internationalization and nationalization, academic power and administrative power, common education and majored education and rationalism and utilitarianism. The problems in each aspect are the specific demonstration of contemporary crisis of universities spirits and concepts. The fourth part of the essay especially analyze the basic problems of contemporary crisis of universities, that is the controversy and conflict of university concept, the lost of university spirit, the dead circulation of organization management of university and the un-training mode of university. On the part of reality, the author illustrates the university problems in contemporary features, including the concept of running school, philosophical basis, university spirit, organization and management, and the training mode of a university to reveal the contemporary perversity. In the author's opinion, the feature of our era is that the whole society is under the situation of essentialism with no standards of choice and existentialist worry with choice of no standards. Universities and the collegiate people exist in a noise of "isolating lofty" and "desalinating history" with the people's involving too much in the whirlpool of "consuming culture" to relieve. We want to ask such a question: Existing in such a contemporary features, whether do universities have nothing to do with it? The author says no to an attitude of nihilism and relativism in Part Five of the essay. The author concentrates to analyze the ways andstrategies for re-establish the university concept and spirit. Theoretically and thoughtfully, the author agree with the opinion of HarbeMath, which tells that contemporary feature is an unfinished cause. So the author testify the way for a university to survive and renew, with large amount of proof on spirit, pursuit, organization and strategy of a university, whose essence is to build a new concept for the university to face the new century in a society of knowledge. Also, the author offers an argument on the post-modern thoughts in China's education field. Therefore, the outer and inner-state of university organization and the culture of it must be on a multi-way to finish the "cohesion" of university and society and leave a distance between them. This is the dialectics of the development of university. Only through an active and calm interference into social life, can the university strategy show its opening features, that is to say, university can develop itself from "arranged" to "self-controlled", from "regulated" to "specialized". In the part of conclusion, the author makes a summarized conclusion. The creative parts of the essay lie in three aspects: first, it shows a new analysis frame. With the application of contemporary features theory to the research of higher education, it deeply analyze the contemporary crisis of modern university, which has been applied in different scientific fields since 1920s. Secondly, it shows the tendency of practicing wisdom. The author does not do the research for the sake of theory. In the part of self-salvation of the university, he proposes the specific real mode and ideal from his own experience of higher education management and administration, which shows his tendency of practice. Thirdly, it profoundly analyze the perversity of modern universities and makes the rigid and dogmatic understanding of some university concept. Its purpose is to change the higher education concept and to practice the university education concept for improving the university spirit and quality. The author synthesize the thoughts resource from philosophy, sociology, pedagogy and politics to discuss the topic, applying document analysis and history study to it in order to ensure the research to be multi-subjective and multi-methodical.
