The thought of unification mainly refers to the systematic thought on the philosophical fundation, philosophical precondition, and philosophical approach of unification by Confucianism, Taoism and other schools of thought.This systematic thought includes the analysis of the origin and law of human society, estimation of the thinking and quality of human as social subject, the sought of the root meaning of nations' existence, the study of social structure and its law of development, and the views on the relationship between diferent cultureal elements. In brief, this systematic thought is a theoretical system that has philosophical significance.Content concerned, this sstem means unification of fundamental views on nature, society and thinking. In Taoism, it is reflected by the Tao; in Confucianism, it is reflected by Ren and LI. Connotation concerned , this system means the political thought directed by fundanmental conceptions. To be exact, it means the methods and measures directed by the teachings of Taoism and Confucianism, such as the thought of u-nification of Tao and Li, universal harmony, and unity over variety. Since pre ?Qin China, many thinkers have voiced their opinions on this thought of unification, among whom Lao- tzu, Confucius, Mencius, Hsun ?tzu, kuan - tzu, and Ssu - ma Ch' ien stand out.The teaching of these great thinkers played a very important role in their respective historical period, and al of them contricubted a lot to the development of China as a nation.In fact, the thought of unification dated back to prehistoric period, Xia and Shang dynasties, experienced its initial stage in the Western Zhou Dynasty, came into being in the late of Spring and Autumn period, developed greatly in the contention of various schools and social reforms of the Warring States period, and in the end ripened in the Qin and Ha dynasties. Being an oped system, it has experienced new changes since Qin and Han dynasties.This thought is not only a great creation of the Chinese nations' wisdom, but also a great contribution to human history and ideological treasurehouse. More importantly, this thought is blessed with the essence that makes it adaptable to new ages, and it will surely play an important role in world peace and development as well as the Chinese nations' s rejuvenation.
