University is superficially regarded as a loose combination of professional academies, but its inner essence of unification helps it form an organic whole. Unification of subjects is the main representation of the inner essence of unification of university. Unification of subjects isn't a random relation of every subject, but a purposefully unification.University seeks not only what is true, but also how a person should behave. In another word, university supplies us with knowledge and the way to get knowledge, and helps us realize ourselves, others and the whole world. Therefore university needs unification of subjects according to their purposes as well as its proper subjects.Nobody denies the relationship between subjects and cognition. The epistemology of Plato, Christianism, and transcendental philosophy by the representatives as Kant all trend to ethicalization. As a result, it is a better way, from the standpoint of epistemology, to study the unification of subjects of European medieval universities and German classical universities. The thesis reviews the history of how the four subjects came into being in European medieval universities and describes the relationship among them. The writer thinks that the four subjects formed purposefully a system, led by theology in order to show that the unification of subjects originally existed in as the mother of university. The thesis analyzed why European medieval universities chose epistemology of Christianism from the angle of their dependence on the society(of Christian world, churches and municipality) that the sense of knowledge hierarchy in ancient western world and epistemology of Christianism are the basis of the unification of subjects. The thesis concluded that why European medieval universities sought what is true and how a person should behave was for God.European medieval universities evolving to German classical universities means actually from the religious to the rational. Kant thought that university must be based on rational sense, by which subjects were organized. So his thoughts about subjects are unanswerable and illusory without his rational sense.Kant thought that as a kind of general abilities of cognition, the rational is a kind of connatural knowledge, which is a general necessary decisive condition of knowledge. Intellectuality produces spontaneously conceptions. The integrated unification of transcendental self-awareness makes intellectuality objective. The rational leads intellectuality to a world of transcendency, so the sense of transcendency comes out. The sense of transcendency, like free will, undying soul, existent God, is out of objectivity, but it makes intellectuality actuality by mistake and become a purpose, which makes knowledge integrated farthest. Therefore the rational consequentially leads to purposefully unification of knowledge. The sense of transcendency is not for extending knowledge. Its concentration is on theoretical debate instead of practical benefit. The pure rational as a principle of the unification of subjects of university means that pursuing what is true and how a person should behave belongs to man, for man makes laws not only for nature but also for morality. Philosophy must lead every subject to a path of truth in order to realize man's freedom, even reach the kingdom of morality. As a result, Humboldt's cultural university wasn't divorced from Kant's rational university.
