Both in the academic development of the Chinese history in the 20th century, and in the international Chinese studies, Lien-sheng Yang was always in the academic mainstream position. He not only had a significant impact, but was a model for study and research.Traditional education received in his early years, not only for him to lay a good learning basis in classical literature, but a more traditional culture deeply rooted in his academic life. Partly because of this, he later engaged in academic study of ancient China. From secondary school he began to accept the modern academic training. He studied in Baoding Zhicun School, High School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University, and Tsinghua University, that nearly all students aspired to study there. In spite of academic environment of deep sectarianism in 1930s, Lien-sheng Yang learned with Chen Yinque, Lei Haizong, Zhang Yinlin, Zhu Ziqing and many other teachers of Tsinghua University. Affected by Tao Xisheng, he gained some achievements in research of social and economic history.Due to the academic opportunities, Yang and Hu Shi, ZhaoYuan-ren become lifelong friends in the United States. Zhang Qiyun and Fu Sinian repeatedly invited him to work with them after graduation. He exchanged with students of Yanjing University closely. He was willing to talk about research with Qian Mu, and supported his work in New Asia College.Integration of Positivism and Interpretation in history, was his most important characteristic in research. Harvard University's learning and coaching experience was a strict training of Western academic for him, that he could stand in the forefront of international research, particularly in the center of Chinese Studies. He exchanged with scholars of France, Japan, and the United States, and made his own contribution to the healthy academic development of China.Lien-sheng Yang was one of the most perspicacious and erudite Chinese scholars. He was at the core of the scholar group of Chinese studies. Both in the academic history of the 20th century and in the history of sinology, people will remember him for his contributions. |
