This dissertation takes Legend of Mohanzhai Definitive Edition asits subject of study.It first investigates MoHanzhai definitive edition,thetext of the original one and the later best-known selection on the basis ofcomparison,and then probes into the characteristic of Feng Menglong'srecomposition and his influence in the history of Chinese traditionalopera.The current dissertation consists of four chapters.Chapter oneexamines the distinguishing features of Feng Menglong's composing andthe case of Legend of Mohanzhai Definitive Edition .First of all,itpresents Feng Menglong's involvement in drama activities in the variousforms of creation,correction and compilation during the late YuanDynasty as well as his influence in the circles of the Chinese traditionalopera.Secondly,it surveys two works Two Heroes and EverythingEnough by Feng Menglong,discusses their artistic features of narrationand weaknesses,and analyzes the influence of musical notation by ShenJing on tonal pattern of Two Heroes as well.Thirdly,scrutinizingcompletely the thoughts on traditional opera in Taixia Xinzou.Finally,itverifies the naming,edition,dramas,and dramatists etc.on Legend ofMohanzhai Definitive Edition.Chapter two illustrates the characteristics of dramatic theory ofadaptation by Feng Menglong.In the first place,this chapter analyzes theideological foundation of his adaptation,Feng Menglong's creativemotivation bears utilitarian nature of"emotional education",which hasdifferent manifestations in fictions and traditional operas.He showed histendency of typification in compiling novels,while tendency to be classicin traditional operas.In addition,the thought of emotional education has agreat impact on Feng Menglong's recomposition of legend.In the nextplace,this chapter fully examines the commentary in Legend ofMoHanzhai Definitive Edition.Centring around his adapted version,Feng Menglong connected adapter with reader,try to well illustrate thetheoretic ideas of adaptation,and demonstrates its Model function.Thetheory of Chinese traditional drama passed through a transformation fromlyricism ofQu to narrative of Ju ,Feng Menglong leaves his footmark bythe adaptation and commentary way in the historyChapter three mainly deals with the comparison between the originalmanuscript of Legend of Mohanzhai Definitive Edition and the adaptedone.It analyses the changes of the adaptation in the form,unitized way ofmusical notation,literature,the spoken parts,act and role and thenfollows the application of Feng Menglong's dramatic theory of adaptationin the adapted one and the achievements it procures.Chapter four discusses the effects of dramatics of Legend ofMohanzhai Definitive Edition.Feng Menglong was well aware of stageart.In his remarks on traditional operas,he often laid emphasis onperforming skills and effects,which reveals his certain sense of direction.The recomposition of various legends in Legend of Mohanzhai DefinitiveEdition is the practice of his ideas on traditional opera.And theacceptance of his adapted versions to a certain extent indicates hisspecific influences and achievements.
