Xu Nan Ying was a famous Taiwanese patriotic poet in modern times and the 25thwinner of the imperial examinations in Taiwan history. His life condensed anintellectual's encounters in modern times: the pains of colony of his homeland, the QingEmpire, the half-victory of the Democratic Revolution of 1911.His destiny was closely tied with his era. The brush pen in his hand painted thechanges of his era. The collection of poems《Kui Yuan Liu Cao》recorded the ups anddowns, breath and width of his age.Comparatively speaking, his life's information is complete, two of which are《chronicle of Kui Yuan Xian Sheng's life》and《a biography of Kui Yuan Xian Sheng'spoem》,on which most researchers today based their comments. They are really of a helpto the researches even though, there are some mistakes in it.This thesis combs Xu Nan Ying's life by his poems and depictions of others abouthim in their works, clarifies some mistakes, restores a real and a vivid image of a poet,and as well, makes an evaluation on his poems and his characters at the end: of writing,depicting a poets brilliant life though with frustration.The thesis consists of Seven chapters: 1st Chapter is introduction, 2nd Chapterdescribes Xu Nan Ying's family background and his path to the imperial examinations. 3rdChapter talks about Xu Nan Ying struggle to fight against Japanese invasion into Taiwanduring Sino-Japanese War between 1894and1895. 4th Chapter focuses on Xu Nan Yingreluctance to leave Taiwan, his floating life, finally taking his career into the imperialcount. 5th Chapter is concerned with his life off the royal count and a disfortune lonelydeath in a foreign land. 6th Chapter discusses the special features and, most of all, theimago of the plum flower in his verse. 7th Chapter briefs magic power of his personality.
