The national art exhibition held by the government in 1929 is the firstnational art exhibition in Chinese history and also is a big summary and showduring the exchange period from the ancient style to the modern one. As anofficial national art exhibition, its biggest difference from other associations orpersonal exhibitions is that it organized all the art factions with different ideasand styles by the power of the government, chose, passed judgment and thengave criticize or praise. This action itself means an anew divide of the paintingfactions and a historical intervene in the tendency of art style in which view theadjusters' interest as regulations. Argument and response caused by this makethis period of history full of strength and charm in academic research.This article holds the following ideas:1. Art exhibition, which comes as an art mass media from the Western, haschanged Chinese people's sense of sight and the habit of appreciate of thepainting, and also overthrew the special value and express way in drawing.2. After 1927, the government got into the period of "xunzheng" in thepolitics area and tried to carry out its "danghua education" which is full ofdictatorship. The original aim of the education department to hold the nationalart exhibition was people's education and art enlighten, but the government wastoo weak to have the power to have organization in the art. It made the disputesin the art area more obvious and caused a series of arguments. This artexhibition mainly for folk artists, so the academically color in the arguments wasvery strong.3. The first national art exhibition has a deep impression of "Japan", theright to hold it changed from Cai Yuanpei's group studying in France (with LinFengmian and Lin Wenzheng as leader) to the artists from Jiangsu, Zhejiang andShanghai with Wang Yiting (Japanese comprador and the powerful man in artarea) as the real operator. This has already shown that Chinese Western drawingstyle tendency was obstructed by the traditions and changed to the institutepersonal education from the society modern. During this period, some areapainting and calligraphy collectors, eg. Wang Yiting, because of their strongeconomic power and deep political background, they kept the tradition andintroduced Chinese traditional art to the abroad through the modern exhibitionand then changed the drawing development tendency in the whole 20 century.
