The historic background of Modern Literature is the modern transformation of Taiwan society after World War II and the modern current of globalization. In the early 1960s, Taiwan transformed from agricultural society into society of industrialization. Modern values like intellectualism, individualism, equality and freedom came along with industrialization. Modernized way of production produced a modern time structure and conception of "from the past to the future". The modern enlightening ideas as progress, individualism, equality, freedom and science gradually gained the recognition of the public. The deep supportive factor of liberalism is the modern time consciousness with "future" as its impetus and value.Human being is itself a congregation of reasonable and unreasonable, physical and spiritual, social and individual contradictions. When the reasonable, social and spiritual sides are fully developed in the modern character of social culture, the unreasonable, sensual and aesthetical sides will try to transcend the modern social current. The modern transformation of Taiwan social culture ignited an unreasonable antagonization of itself while it tried to make people reasonable. The aesthetic time and modern time is contradictory.Modern literature had close relations with five modern literary currents in Taiwan society after World War II. In dialogue with them, it took or discarded, agreed or transcended their components, and thus formed its own characters. The left-wing local literary current takes materialism as its ideological basis, and makes its foundation on the avowal that they represent and care about the interest and power will of the public. However, as a whole, Modern Literature takes individualism and humanity as itsideological basis. The left-wing literature lays stress on realistic creative attitude and approaches, so the purpose of literature is not literature itself, but out of it. On the contrary, Modern Literature embraces modernistic creative approaches, and emphasizes the independence of literature.Only when the classification methods and norms on the basis of the unity of content and form is established that the meaning-producing mechanism of literary works and the combination contents in a novel can be explained. The integral components are different in different types of novels. The different dimensions of time, such as present, past and future, or different awareness of time, such as natural time, evolutional time, existentialistic time, historic time and psychological time, can all give "value" to semantic structure as structural components. Such is the ideological basis on which to classify novels in Modern Literature in the perspective of time awareness.The contrast between "present" and "past" forms a relationship of dialogue. The novel on the basis of modern time awareness always lays a contradiction between discontent and satisfaction, and the driving power of narration is to go from discontent to satisfaction. The cultural psychology and the aesthetic psychological structure of the author is projected in the text of Modern Literature, and thus forms multiple deep structures. These structures, as the unity of content and form, reflect the diversity of modern characters in novels.The novels in Modern Literature employ nearly all of narrative approaches ever appeared in history. The authors give special aesthetic effects to novels by employing different combinations of narrative approaches.The typological study on aesthetics is not only to describe the typological characteristics of aesthetic objects, but also related to the aesthetic approach, aestheticideal and aesthetic taste of the author. The novels in Modern Literature mainly create two tragic style, solemn and sorrow. Those novels always employ some kind of symbolic approaches, which distort artistic images and make them strange, draw artistic world far away from the reality, and thereby break the restrictions of the reality.
