| BACKGROUND:The health of Oi and fluid forms the material foundation for physical performance.Qi belongs to yang while fluid belongs to yin.They are an interdependent pair that produces each other and transforms into each other.Their normal production can directly impact the body's capability to quickly regain balance and replenish energy material lost during physical exertion.The movement of qi and the production,distribution and elimination of fluid are necessary for the removal of waste material which is also an important factor in fatigue recovering mechanism.PURPOSE:The purpose of study was to define the Chinese medicine theorilogical basis for using Enhancing Qi while Nourishing Fluid(EQNF) method against physical fatigue and the EQNF formula,and to study the effectiveness and mechanism of EQNF formula on physical fatigue prevention.METHODS: Wistar Rats was used in both studies.Studyâ… :EQNF formula was given to both control group and fatigue animal model group at three doseage levels while water was given to both zero dose control group for 8 weeks.After 4 work of free living,fatigue anminal model group went through four weeks swim training regime.Indicators on energy material metabolism,and the changes in blood,immume,and endocrine system were measured.Studyâ…¡:EQNF formula was given to both control group and fatigue animal model group at two doseage levels while water was given to both zero dose control group for 4 weeks. Fatigue anminal model group went through four weeks swim training regime.Swimming to exhaustion time was measured on fatigue animal model group at 2.5 weeks and 4 week and on control group at at 4 weeks.RESULTS:EQNF formula can prolong the swimming to exhaustion time(p<0.05);increase serum glucagon(p<0.01);reduce serum corticosterone(p<0.01);help maintain blood glucose level;reduce serum free fatty acid(p<0.05),D-3-hydroxybutyric acid and blood urea nitrogen(p<0.01);increase red blood cell count and Haemoglobin level(p<0.05);increase CD4,IgG and IgM level(p<0.05);activates nature killer cells(p<0.05);and lowers IL-6 elevation in low and high dose fatigue animal model group(p<0.05).CONCLUSIONS:EQNF formula could improve rats' capability to endure physical stress through 1) increase glucagon secretion to maintain high blood sugar level and using more body fat as energy source during exercise;2) increase HGB and RBC level to improve oxygen supply to muscle tissue; 3)improve the elimination of waste material to delay the onset of muscle fatigue;4) slow down stress reaction caused by physical stress;5) increase certain specific and non-specific immune functions in fatigued animals. |
