TCM has studied jaundice for over 2,000 years, which has the symptoms of yellowish sclera, yellowish body and yellowish emiction. In Qin and Han dynasties, we got to know the basic concept of jaundice. Treatise on Cole-Attack established the system of theory, therapy and formulae of jaundice. In Sui and Tang dynasties, books such as The Formulae Worth A Thousand Gold for Emergency set up the system of clinical diagnosis and treatment. With the profound comprehend of jaundice and the accumulation of clinical treatment, the system of jaundice was enlarged. In Song, Jin and Yuan dynasties, civilian doctors tried to the predigest the theories of jaundice, and applied to the clinic. Their continuators tried to syncretize all the theories and made progress in Ming and Qing dynasties. Today, TCM still play an important part in the treatment of jaundice. To review the history of TCM jaundice completely, this article researches into the rule of progress of the theories of jaundice, gathers the remedy and formulae of jaundice, and provides historical materials for the development of jaundice.. Based on the collection and reading of primal historical materials of jaundice, this article studies on the history of TCM jaundice completely, explores the establishment and progress of several theories of jaundice in their own historical backgrounds. This article mainly studies the theories of jaundice in Song, Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, and also probes into the TCM jaundices' taboos and the external treatment of jaundice.This article contrasts Taiping Royal Prescriptions and General Medical Collection of Royal Benevolence, points out the source of their theories and formulae. Doctors Han zhi-he, Shi kan, Wang kuang, Liu wan-su and Zhang yuan-su etc. brought forward the theories of Yin-Yang jaundices and the wet-hot (cold) jaundices. The foregone scholars neglected the advance of the theory of wet-hot (cold) jaundices. This article get the conclusion that the theory of wet-hot (cold) jaundices was established and consummated by inheriting and expanding Zhang zhong-jing's theories of jaundice, and became the leading theory of jaundice from Song Dynasty to the middle of Ming Dynasty.After the theory of Yin-Yang jaundices was put forward in Song Dynasty, it did not favorably become the major one in jaundice theories, as what the scholars of the history of TCM thought before. After comparing Zhang Jiebin's contribution and the doctors' before or after him, we can reach the conclusion that Zhang Jiebin was the keyman to the development, perfection and spread of Yin-Yang jaundices, and his work was the turning point for Yin-Yang jaundices from being disregarded to being the leading theory of jaundice.The exogenous—internal—injuries theory of Jaundice theorized in Ming—Qing Dynasties. By the research of the course of the germination, start, development and establishment of it, this article will point out the important characters and works, and spell out their limitations, as well it will find out the infection of the theory to the therapy of jaundice of TCM today.
