The dispersion-thirst disease (Xiao Ke Bing) is a kind of disease name cf Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Dispersion-thirst disease includes some diabetes mellitus (DM). DM morality is close to those of cardiovascular disease and neoplasia. Its complications affect all organs and entire body, and threaten the life of humanity. Modern medicine's treatment efficacy of DM is extremely limited. The treatment of the dispersion-thirst disease has agelong history. We can find the record of dispersion-thirst disease in the documents that were written two thousand years ago. In the following years, the TCM doctor learned the dispersion-thirst disease more and more. So it is very necessary for us to study the academic History of the dispersion-thirst disease.The author thinks that the dispersion-thirst disease in ancient TCM book included two meanings: broad sense and narrow sense. The broad sense dispersion-thirst disease includes DM, diabetes insipidus and hyperthyroidism. The narrow sense dispersion-thirst disease includes part of DM sufferers. Some sufferers don't appear obvious symptom of thirstiness, diuresis, hungriness and losing weight, but their blood sugar exceeds normal level. The doctor can diagnose the illness of these sufferers as DM but not as the dispersion-thirst disease. So the dispersion-thirst disease and DM are not totally the same disease. In the paper, author primarily studied the narrow sense dispersion-thirst disease.The paper includes two parts. The first part systematically summarized the evolution of the academic history of the dispersion-thirst disease. Through literature collection and research, the author believes that the Xianqin dynasty is the original period of the academic history of the dispersion-thirst disease, the Weijin dynasty and Suitang dynasty are the evolutional period of the academic history of the dispersion-thirst disease, the Wudai dynasty, Liao dynasty and Song dynasty are the deposit period of the academic history of the dispersion-thirst disease, the Ming dynasty and Qing dynasty are the upgradeperiod of the academic history of the dispersion-thirst disease.In the second part, the author made suggestions about how to show characteristic and superiority of treating the dispersion-thirst disease with TCM means. Firstly, we should study literature more carefully and find more useful knowledge, such as the treatment principle of suit measures according to three categories of etiological factors, rich and colorful cooking herb methods and prophylactic idea. Secondly, we should change the acquaintance with the dispersion-thirst disease because our constitution has been changed at present. We should adjust the TCM prevention and treatment means of DM, and pay more attention to toxicity. Meanwhile, we should do more study on alleviating insulin resistance through TCM. Thirdly, we should make the characteristic and superiority of treating the dispersion-thirst disease with TCM means clear. The author believes that treating DM with TCM means has the following characteristic and superiority, such as depressing blood sugar in special environment, preventing and treating DM chronic complication and improving the quality of life. In order to prove above-mentioned characteristic and superiority, the author suggests conducting clinical experiments on a large scale. Lastly, we should establish a new curative effect evaluation system, which can incarnate TCM characteristic and be recognized by modern medicine.
