Asthma is a chronic characterized by airway obstruction and inflammation that is at least partially reversible with medication and is almost always associated with allergies. Allergic asthma is the most common form of asthma. Many of the symptoms are coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath or rapid breathing, and chest tightness. Through a complex reaction, these allergens cause the passages in the airways of the lungs to become inflamed and swollen. This results in coughing, wheezing and other asthma symptoms.Asthma is one of the most dangerous diseases in the world that is damaging the public heath. There are more than 100 million asthma patients totally in the world. Recent years, some fundamental questions about asthma are broken through especially in the area of the pathology, immunology and pharmacology. But, at the same time, the popularity statistic research about asthma also indicates the onset of asthma is increased dramatically and the death rate of asthma is also increasing. Because the pathologic mechanism of asthma is very complicated, there are a lot unsolved issues about this topic. The treatment of asthma is also not good enough in conventional western medicine; the main problem of the western treatment is unstable and not effective enough. This situation made the research about TCM for the treatment of asthma is very urgent and realistic.This research project is composed of two parts: Theoretical research and clinic research. In the theoretical research part, we analyzed the ancient asthma documents from "HuangDiNeiJing" to Ming and Qing dynasty. The research included the name of asthma, which part of the body asthma happens in, the reasons that triggered asthma, the mechanism of asthma, how to diagnose the asthma from some other similar diseases, the treatments of asthma from the point of view of TCM. We also summarized the "ShangHanLun"'s views about asthma.
