The following text is divided in two parts, fundamental research and clinical studies.Fundamental research: The traditional Chinese medicine and the modem medicine approaches tounderstanding and treating bursitis in the shoulder are reviewed and summarised. Modern clinicaluses of acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine and the combination of the two for thetreatment of bursitis in the shoulder are presented to provide the theoretical basis for the clinicalstudy and treatment of this condition.Clinical studies: The thermoacupuncture treatment, orally administered traditional medicine andthe combination of the two for the treatment and pain management of bursitis in the shoulder areobserved and compared. The outcomes are assessed based on joint function improvement and theoverall curative effect. The results indicated that the effect of the combination treatment surpasseseither of the stand-alone treatments in alleviating the pain due to bursitis in the shoulder as well asin improving the overall curative effect. The comparison of thermoacupuncture and orallyadministered traditional Chinese medicine show no significant difference in treatment outcome. With regards to the improvement in joint function of patients with bursitis in the shoulder, thetreatment outcomes of thermoacupuncture and the combination treatment surpass the effect oforally administered traditional Chinese medicine. There is no significant difference between thetreatment outcomes of thermoacupuncture and the combination treatment. This result provides thebasis for the selection of the appropriate treatment method for bursitis in the shoulder.
