| Chengde Mountain Resort is the art treasure of Chinese North Royal Garden. It is also an outstanding representative of royal gardens of Qing Dynasty. The construction of Chengde Mountain Resort collected the wisdom of gardening technique all over the country. It spent 89 years (1703-1792) to finish this treasure, gathering thousands of stones, collecting the essence from many gardens. The high level of Chengde Mountain Resort's gardening art has been proved by various validations for years. So does its spatial layout and organization.Space Syntax Theory was pointed out by Bill Hiller in 1960s, who is a professor at University of London. This theory has been widely used in the field of urban planning. He also became the newest representative in the field of space analysis. Visibility Analysis and Space Syntax is. This quantitative result is also very necessary for this major. However, this analysis method focusing on the garden space still needs to be improved.In Chinese traditional garden theories, the analyses of space are staying in the perceptual and qualitative view. We have few convincing theories to analyze Chinese traditional gardens in a rational and quantitative way. This paper deals with the study of space analysis combined with Space Syntax Theory, using Chengde Mountain Resort as an example, which is one of the representative among Chinese Royal Gardens. During this analysis, the rewrite and the update of the calculating method and theory are needed. At the same time, compare the analysis result of Space Syntax with the traditional ways of garden space analysis. On that basis, there is a more appropriate way to analyze the gardens in different space scales and patterns. Finally, it seeks to come up with a useful and operable method about Space Syntax, which can be used in Chinese traditional nature type gardens. This new method will get the analysis free of simple text description as well as pictures. It brings the traditional garden analysis into a brilliant field, which is based on the digital analyses and quantitative studies.It comes up with the origin of the whole article and the core content in the first chapter of this paper, like the Space Syntax, garden space analysis, the basic introduction of Chengde Mountain Resort and the recent advances in and abroad. This part defines that the analysis object is the space analysis of Chengde Mountain Resort. The second chapter illustrates the definition and the development of Space Syntax. It introduces the basic variables, the analysis methods and the examples in urban space scales. It helps the readers to understand the method used in this paper. The third paper begins to deal with these Chinese traditional garden examples which have already bring in Space Syntax. Analyze and compare these cases and other Constructal Theory, incorporate different situations and then discuss the application method of Space Syntax in Chinese traditional gardens. Finally put forward a feasible method. The forth chapter summarize the analyses in the industry and conclude that there are about two types of analysis, the digital analysis and the non-digital analysis. On this foundation, the method can be subdivided, in order to give a comprehensive method list and then come up with a reasonable induction, and finally provide a convictive garden space analysis method by vertical comparison in a small scale. The fifth chapter begins with an introduction of the different space patterns in Chengde Mountain Resort. To these space patterns, use traditional space analysis method and Space Syntax analysis method to study, then summarize the advantage and disadvantage of each method after comparing results of the former analyses. And then find out how to use Space Syntax Theory Analysis Method to explain various situations. The sixth chapter is a summary of this paper's innovation and gaps. Besides, it also gives a catalogue of conclusions, hoping the readers or the author can continue and finish this study in the future.
