As a case study of Kunshan which has the fastest economic growth in China, the correlation of urban-rural integration and landscape pattern change is researched to provide a scientific basis that can promote harmonious development of urban-rural integration and landscape pattern. Based on TM image maps of remote sensing data and land use data on 5 piriods from 1985 to 2008 in Kunshan City, it accessed to the number of plaques, plaque area and the value of landscape ecological indicators with application of RS software Envi4.4, spatial data analysis platform ArcGis9.0 and Fragstate3.3, Image Analyzer1.0. Urban-rural integration comprehensive evaluation system is constructed to reflect the true level of Kunshan city. We also applied the evaluation of gray correlation method to build a urban-rural integration coupling evaluation model in order to identify the interaction between the two. The main conclusions are as follows:(1)With the decreasing area of half-natural landscapes, artificial landscape area increased rapidly. The changed values of landscape ecology indices (PD, FN, LPI, MPS, ED, DI) reflect that the landscape fragmentation is upward in Kunshan, large plaque are seriously divided by the impact of human activities, especially for water landscape pattern.The evolution of coupling region is influenced by urban and rural, but the main driving force of artificial landscape's radial expansion is the expansion of artificial landscape. And their expression for correlation is (y=0.0211x2+0.4087x+4.786, R2=0.9992).There is a significant correlation between PD, FN, LPI, ED and the expansion of built-up landscape, the decisive factor R2 respectively is 0.9984,0.8616,0.9849,0.9654, indicating that the artificial expansion is an important driving force for urban-rural landscape pattern changes.(2) Applying with the AHP comprehensive evaluation method, based on a production economic, social and livelihood, science and education, municipal environmental indicators of 4 families and 20 indicators contract a evaluation system that reflect the level of urban-rural integration. Then evaluate the result of Kunshan from 2000 to 2008. The result shows that the scores of urban-rural integration is 54.44 points (out of 100) in 2008; it belongs to an intermediate stage of urban-rural integration. The value of urban-rural integration for production economic index layer is the highest (72.42%), reflecting the smaller gap of economy, and the biggest difference of social and livelihood indicators between urban and rural. The evaluation results for all towns of Kunshan show that the integration level spread from center to periphery.(3)Coupling evaluation showed that there is a complex coupling mechanism between the urban-rural integration and landscape pattern change. In the process of urban-rural integration, the important order for the main driving factors which stressed the evolution of landscape pattern: Production economic> municipal environment> social and livelihood> science and education, production economic almost affect the fragmentation of landscape pattern. Comparing the sensitivity of all landscape that is driven by urban-rural integration indicated that the pattern of trade and traffic changes in land use is mostly obvious, and its coupling value is the highest (0.688) then followed by the green landscape (0.678),the value indicating that the areas of green space are increasing, but the layout of it is not reasonable, not formation of large and a continuous landscape, making the green landscape of the patch number, patch density, Patch fragmentation increase. Forest landscape has the lowest coupling (0.642).(4) Since 1985, the comprehensive level of urban-rural integration for Kunshan increased gradually. After the year of 2000, the growth of composite index accelerated obviously. The development of urban-rural integration increases linearly, the expresstion is (y= 0.0145x—28.686,R2=0.9644). The change of landscape mainly express as fragmentation of landscape, the polynomial expression of landscape pattern evolution for urban-rural integration is as (y=0.0012x2-4.5863 x+4551.6,R2=0.9722). This study found that the relationship between urban-rural integration and the landscape pattern change is similar as urbanization and the environmental quality by the Functional programming, and it's expression curve shows an incomplete inverted "U" type which is basically conform the environmental Kuznets curve.
