It’s of great importance to studying the temporal and spatial distribution of Nanning landscape patterns as well as its urban heat island effect while the city is in fast urbanization. With the application of multi-source remote sensing data, this research was about to study on both that two respects of Nanning city by using the landscape metrics. Additionally gradient analysis of Nanning landscape pattern were also taken in this research. And the findings shown that:(1) The urban landscape kept increasing during1999-2013while the agricultural landscape kept declining and transformed to urban landscape. The urbanization had a translation rule which from agricultural landscape to constructional landscape and then to urban landscape. The expansion of Nanning city had two different mode:radial type and axial type, in the past14a the new urban landscape spread along the major road and acted a circle structure.(2) According to the result of Markov model forecast the urban landscape would continue to increase while the greening landscape and agricultural landscape decreased in the next35a start from2020. The urban expansion would be in a constant speed until saturated, however, the water landscape had a massive decline that should take more efforts to preserve urban wetland in the urban planning.(3) There lay a significant gradient in Nanning landscape pattern and landscape type transformed from residential landscape to agricultural landscape gradually as the distance from center increased. The fragmentation and diversity of landscape in urban-rural eco tone are bigger than other areas as a whole. Gradient variations in two transect were quite varied in each direction, which indicated that the urban expansion was not equal in all directions for the terrain limitation and was mainly on the eastern region.(4) With the urbanization process the heat islands region enlarged but the degree of fragmentation decreased in high thermal landscape level, so as a whole the urban heat island effort was mitigated. The areas which thermal landscape levels up were also to where new urban landscape and constructional landscape spread. The water landscape could regulate surrounding microclimate in either two ways:weakening the heat island as most findings or becoming high thermal landscape level in winter. The thermal landscape level Ⅱ and level Ⅲ were the transit between extreme and medium thermal landscape levels, that making them the key to control urban heat island effort.
