Eastern Jianghuai Urban Development History Research

Regional and comprehensive study about the urban development was always been appreciated by the academic community. With the new urbanization promoted by the central communist party,the continuation about the historic context comes to be a key point of urban planning. The research region of this thesis is located between the Yangtze River and Huaihe River, and the east of the Grand Canal, the region is located in the Jiangsu province, which is one of the comprehensive trial provinces in first round of national new urbanization. Therefore, the author focuses on the urban development history of the eastern Jianghuai region, intents timely sum up the past history of urban development and the experiences of urbanization, thinks about the evolution of urban development on the basis of the new urbanization strategy advocated by the central government, which should be able to better clear development thoughts and provide history references to further sustainable development.Firstly, the author divides the development history in four stages which are the pre-Qin period, Qin and Han Dynasties, Sui, Tang and Song Dynasties, Ming and Qing Dynasties, and describes the urban in eastern Jianghuai region from the method of architecture, urban and rural planning, historical geography, demography, social economics, etc., afterwards, analyzes and summarizes each period from three aspects which are administrative districts, urban distribution in density and urban formation mechanism.Secondly, on the basis of diachronic study, the author extracts and classifies the historical elements which affect the regional formation and development by using the method of hierarchical classification, and analyze the elements from the perspective of vertical and horizontal aspects, builds the space network of urban development history, and then concludes the eastern Jianghuai region structure in three forms, which are the urban system along the Grand Canal between Huaian and Yangzhou thrived by grain transportation, the urban system in Lixia River region thrived by the hydrological landscape change, the coastal urban system along the coastal line thrived by the salt industry.Finally, the author states the current situation and problems in each urban system, and dissects the urban system transformation and characteristics, urban internal space form change. Based on the perspective of historical research, the author puts forward the suggestions about each urban system, aiming at the continuation of historical context during the period of new urbanization construction.
