As the development foundation of other manufacturing industry, the number of equipment manufacturing firms has shown the scale of manufacturing industry, and the level of development of it has also decided the development quality of other manufacturing industry. Thus, the equipment manufacturing industry’s level of development plays an important role in improving the development of Chinese manufacturing industry. Therefore, the research on Chinese equipment manufacturing industry not only has the theory significance, and has the practical significance.Due to special history, politics and economics of China, the development of Chinese equipment manufacturing industry has the characters of industrial agglomeration. It is significant to calculate the degrees of spatial agglomeration of it, and based on the calculation, we can find out the concrete region of the agglomeration. Though these, we can do deep analysis on the cause of the spatial agglomeration. The equipment manufacturing industry is subdivided into metal products manufacturing, general purpose machinery manufacturing, special purpose machinery manufacturing, transportation equipment manufacturing, electric equipment and machinery manufacturing, electronic and telecommunication equipment manufacturing, and instrumentation and cultural and office equipment manufacturing. The deep exploration of the spatial agglomeration heterogeneity of these different industries is important. One of the focal points of this paper is to calculate the degrees of spatial agglomeration of Chinese equipment manufacturing industry, and analyze the agglomeration heterogeneity of its sub-industry.On a theoretical level, effective spatial agglomeration of Chinese equipment manufacturing industry can produce enormous economic benefits, such as specialization and cooperation of the industry, fully exertion and utilization of resources and popularity promotion in industry. However, agglomeration is a double-edged sword. Agglomeration excessive will cause problems, such as vicious competition, economic isomorphism and wasting of resources. On a practical level, we would like to know that whether the current agglomeration of Chinese equipment manufacturing industry has a positive or negative effect. Based on practice and advanced scientific methodology, this paper has researched the problems empirically and tried to seek the solution.Systematically elaborating other scholars’ achievements, we find that currently research literature both at home and abroad related to this problem have fresh quest. Following the cutting edge advances in research on this issue, this paper chooses the appropriate measure methods to calculate and analyze the agglomeration degree and benefits of Chinese equipment manufacturing industry. The main work and achievements are as follow:(1) This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the development evolution path and spatial distribution of Chinese equipment manufacturing industry. Though the analysis, we have a preliminary understanding of the spatial development of Chinese equipment manufacturing industry and it makes a realistic foundation for later empirical research.(2) By using EG index, the paper estimates the spatial agglomeration degree of Chinese equipment manufacturing industry and analyzes the agglomeration heterogeneity of its sub-industry. Based on the results, the paper has systemically studied the current status and causes of the agglomeration.(3) We reconstruct the agglomeration structure benefit measurement index and agglomeration effect index, and then calculate and analyze the agglomeration benefits of Chinese equipment manufacturing industry. Countermeasures and suggestions on improving agglomeration and its benefits are proposed at the end of this paper.
