The former Soviet Union’s and Eastern European’s socialism practice had failed, which had made some western people feel "there is no alternative" in addition to capitalism. On the other hand, the global financial crisis also let people know that the capitalist market economy may produce serious problems. China’s socialist market economic system and the policy of reform and opening up for30years had made brilliant achievements, but there were still some obvious problems. American left-wing Marxist scholar David Schweickart is an important representative about the thought of contemporary western market socialism. His theory had made benignant discuss about the above problems, so it was worthy of our study.David Schweickart’s theoretical research is mainly focused on two aspects:the critique of capitalism’s "there is no alternative" and the alternative plan of economic democracy of the market socialist. He introduced the existing capitalist criticism, which was mainly reflected in his critique of the "non-comparative justification" and the "comparative justification". The "non-comparative justification" theory of new classical economics thinks that the distribution of capitalism is based on the contribution of the factors of production, and it is fair. The "comparative justification" thinks that the capitalism itself may not be perfect, but better than any other existing or possible assumption system, so, although it’s not perfect, but there is no choice. David Schweickart had carried out detailed analysis and criticism on both of the two arguments, many of which content is worth our careful consideration and attention.David Schweickart advocates a combination of the efficiency advantages of market economy and the socialist value of equality, the main features of his theory of market socialism of economic democracy are:the commodities and services shall be market economy; the workplace should realize democratic management and the social investment shall be democratic control. He thinks it retains the biggest advantage of capitalism and also wipes off the biggest flaw of capitalism, so it is more equal and more democratic than capitalism, and more efficient than the planned economy. There lies both common aspects and different character between his theory of market socialism and China’s socialist market economy theory. We should absorb his reasonable aspects in his thought in order to making contribution to China’s socialist market economy. To a great extent, the reason why the market economy has the efficiency is determined to the certain human nature, or the certain human psychological characteristics. Marx’s theory of historical materialism of social existence determines social consciousness and his theory of class struggle, to a certain extent, preset or contain some humanity hypothesis, we might as well call it the "quasi-psychology self-serving" assumptions. For thirty years of reform and opening up, China’s socialist market economic achievements has greatly proved this hypothesis. According to this hypothesis, we should adhere to the way of socialist market economy, and constantly improve it. Meanwhile, we should maintain sharp vigilance to and guard against the harm of crony capitalism during the development process of our country socialist market economy. Moreover, we need to perfect market economic system, transform the functions of the government and then build a limited government.David Schweickart’s idea of economic democracy is mainly reflected in the democratization management of the workplace and democratization control of the investment. This paper will do some research on China’s socialist economic democracy, which will combined with David Schweickart’s thought and other economic and democratic ideas at home and abroad. We will inquire into some suggestions such as the development of labor’s share of the property rights of democracy within the state ownership economy; the improvement of laborer’s democratic management of the participation rights; the investment of democracy within the macro-control and the distribution of democracy that advocates all the people could share the surplus of the state-owned economy, thus basically most people will share the achievements in the construction of socialist economy.
