Breaking And Continuing: "Xinmin Evening News" And The Construction Of Socialism Shanghai Daily Living Space (1949-1966)

In this research, through about25,000reports related to daily life in Xinmin Evening News (1949-1966) and specialized history, official publications, local archives, oral history interviews, the author examined the way Xinmin Evening News constructed daily life spaces in "17years before the Cultural Revolution" as well as the relationship between the newspaper and daily life.Coverage on Xinmin Evening News showed common trends on "hot moments" and different degrees of being disciplined by political power in representation of daily life space and life-styles in basic aspects of daily life such as consumption, housing, food, clothing and leisure.Although the class character was deeply embedded in the everyday life space after the liberation, even political power could not turn a blind eye to the continuity of daily life. Construction of Xinmin Evening News of diet space is relatively the freest, while representation of housing space exhibited a high degree of unity. These were due to the difference of continuity of life-styles in different daily living spaces, as well as the distance from the center of political power. Because of the complexity of Consumption space, leisure space and clothing in space, construction of Xinmin Evening News also presents various characteristics.In the three "hot moments"--the early1950s,1956or so and1962or so, a trend of " tight-loosetight" had emerged in Shanghai daily life represented by Xinmin Evening News and the discourses of newspaper. This showed that the construction about daily life space by Xinmin Evening News after the liberation was still essentially made in the framework of the political ideology. At the same time, this trend shows that the "tightness" in the early1950s was more like an expedient when people were faced with the political upheavals. Socialist ideology did not approach the the core of daily life style and daily life space in Shanghai until1962.As one kind of spacial view, Xinmin Evening News in the disciplining of political power reproducted a set of complex and sometimes contradictory imagination and interpretation about urban life. These were representation of the complexity of the social reality. Meanwhile, on many occasions, Xinmin Evening News directly made the intervention of the constitution of the urban spaces and participated in the practice of the space by coverage and expression of opinion.
