Although new drugs have been developed, anthralin is still considered one of the most important modality for the treatment of psoriasis. However, its side effects—irritation and staining limited its use. In order to reduce the side effects of anthralin while maintaining its therapeutic effects, we prepared a new formulation—anthralin stick(AS), and studied its antipsoriatic efficacy with special reference to the side effects. Three groups of symetrical plaque type psoriatic patients were enrolled in the studies by self-bilateral comparisons for four weeks in the following different procedures,The first gorup included 45 outpatients who were treated in a right-left comparisons using AS vs anthralin ointment(AO) at the same concentrations(0.25, 0.5,1, 2%) which were adjusted once a week. Two of them withdrew from the study because of heavy irritation at the end of the first week. Another three patients were lost at the third week with no medical reasons. Forty patients completed the study, among whom 32 cleared well and no differences were clinically observed between the treated sides, but the side effects—irritation and staining of the stick formulation were significantly lower than that of the ointment. Therefore, patients would like to accept the stick. In the second group, 30 inpatients were treated with AS in short contact therapy(SCT,30 min.) vs conventional contact therapy (CCT, 24hrs) by self-bilateral comparisons at the same concentrations(0.25, 0.5, 1, 2,3% ) which were adjusted every third day. All of them completed the study. In the first two weeks, the effects of SCT side were significantly lower than that of the CCT side. However, at the end of the fourth week, the differences were...
