Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is one of the important blinding diseases in our country. It has a quick onset, and the treatment of it is still complicated by now. The key to control this disease is prevention, which based on: knowing the epidemiological characteristics in the population firstly, and realizeing the etiology in the individual secondly. No population-based epidemiology study of RRD was conducted in China before our survey, resulting in unable to control the risk population. Furthermore, the molecular etiology of RRD is not precise yet, while no studies have been given to determine the relative gene of it.This study investigated the susceptibility of RRD in population and genes. First part: population-based epidemiology surveyObjective: To investigate the recent incidence of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) in Chinese people of Beixinjing district, Shanghai, and discuss its related factors. Methods: This incidence survey was given in more than 100 000 local population. Self-made questionnaires were constructed before the survey. Information of RRD patients was acquired from outpatient service, former hospital records and the local health databank, which based on health data of 97.5% of all residents. A contrast group was set up. The previous district population census can be used to estimate the whole and specific incidence. Some factors relevant to RRD incidence can be found by comparing the patient group and the contrast group. Results: Between 1996 and 1999, 61 new RRD patients were found. The annual incidences of RRD were 11.3/100 000, 14.1/100 000, 14.1/100 000 and 17.9/100 000 respectively, with an average of 14.4/100 000(95% confidence interval 10.0-18.6). The average relative risk between the next two years was 1.17. These patients included 29 men and 32 women. There was a high incidence of RRD in persons older than 40, especially between 40 and 59. Bilateral RRD happened in 6 patients (9.8%). 7 patients (11.5%)had an ocular trauma history 6 months before the RRD onset. The incidence of RRD in relatives of these patients was 1.32%. 41.0% of the RRD patients were high myopia(more than -6D).When compared with the contrast group, the proportion of high myopia was significantly higher in RRD patients group ( x~2=7.34, P<0.01) . Conclusions: The annual incidence of RRD in local Chinese was increasing. It was strongly associated...
