The higher education in China has accessed great development in the past two decades. Many characterized campuses have been built and a lot of research on university campus has been produced. . However, little researches about higher vocational and technical college campus(In China, they are called Polytechnic Schools), which occupies more than 50% of total higher education capacity in China, are taken into account. The campus planning and design of vocational and technical college is still using the same method as the university applications. Due to different characteristics of vocational and technical colleges, it postponed their sustainable developments and caused irrational distributions of resources. It has been necessary to detailed research on the planning of vocational colleges. This thesis utilized various methods to research the design manners in vocational colleges, including case study, theoretical deduction, and site survey etc. The Guangdong Vocational College was set as the main research object, and Jiangzhe Vocational College was referred as a comparison. Firstly, development history of higher vocational education was reviewed, and the characteristics of various vocational and technical campuses was summarized. Through the view of synergetic development, the theoretical framework of higher vocational and technical college campus was developed.Three levels of synergetic development were analyzed, including function-economic morphology, and humanity and district. The problems of planning design, architectural design and construction developments in higher vocational and technical campuses were discussed. the potential strategies to improve construction, design and management were concluded..The vocational education differs from the ordinary high education in their training targets. The vocational education focuses on training professions with specific skills, and the high education concentrates on research scholars. The development trend of vocational colleges is to integrate their campuses with community and enterprises. The planning and design of campus should assist to their training targets, a potentially extend to outward training bases and community training centers. The planning and design methods should pay attention to their contents and fulfill the requirements of synergetic developments.Vocational education zones should set training and collaboration as their center, rely on the manufacturing side in the industrial chain, and develop education and industry in parallel. It is inaccurate to apply the design mode of R&D hi-tech industrial park or the mode of rapidly constructed University City to vocational education zone. Otherwise the vocational education zones can not achieve the advantage of relying on assembling development of each other. The construction of higher vocational education campus should emphasize on the vocational skill training center. The campus planning design should be based on the teaching modes, students'characteristics of higher vocational and technical college and industry features. This dissertation has studied the new type of campus building in vocational and technical colleges, put forward part of the evaluation indicators, and suggested that the evaluation should be subject to different situations in different places. It is not wise to use the same rules and regulations in all campus building.Guangdong Vocational and Technical College should closely combine the essence of vocational education with the characteristics of regional industry and district cultures, tries to absorb reasonable planning and construction modes to build a campus of synergetic development and incorporating things of diverse nature.
