On the background of rapid urbanization and rural industry transformation, the rural settlement in the middle area of China is now in the process of fierce social transformation, while its spatial restructuring is also being accelerated. This process includes not only rational improvement but also inordinate"constructive destruction". This dissertation is problem-oriented. It indicates that either the great change of space or of society in the rural settlement is not an isolated phenomenon. They are obviously correlative. At first, the dissertation makes a comparative study about the cases of five small towns. By fieldwork and analysis of the materials collected, the paper abstracts the significant interaction mechanism between spatial restructure and society transformation, and explores the evaluation on spatial restructuring from the social angle. From the angle of architecture and urban planning specialty, the paper puts forward some spatial construction strategies about how spatial restructuring can adapt and promote society transformation. The dissertation sums up some regular problems between spatial restructuring and society transformation in the middle area of China. The writer of the paper thinks that the contemporary complex problem of the rural settlement in the middle area of China should be dealt with from the pluralistic concept of"government- market-society", a"compact"with elements closely-related as well as differentiated. It is impossible to solve the problem by considering space alone. The study shows although most villages and towns in the middle area of China originated from the rural settlements, under different backgrounds, they experienced different social transformations or different stages thereof, and went through different ways of spatial restructuring. During the process, the interaction mechanisms suggested by this paper are key parameters, which influence rural settlement development differently. However, many construction subject departments usually adopt several fixed"modes"to be copied in the settlements. The construction work of these towns often neglects the social background and connotation of the figuration space, it also neglects the existing value of"man"as an individual, as well as the interference brought about by the subjective consciousness of"man". Based on this understanding, the paper puts forward the view that rural settlement in the middle area should keep their different development ways as well as their diverse developing objectives.
