1.Bohai Sea is an internal sea of China, and a semi-enclocsed sea surrounded by land from three directions. Bohai Sea is well endowed with natural resources. It not only produces large quantities of aquatic products, like fish and shrimp, provides favourable conditions for developing aquaculture, it also has such predominant resources as ports and harbours, oil and gas, tourism and sea salt and so on. Since China adopted the reform and open policy, the circum-Bohai Sea economic zone has gradually taken shape, including east Liaoning peninsula, east Shandong peninsula, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area, and has extended to Shangxi, the central eastern part of inner-Mongolia as well as the whole of Liaoning and Shandong, playing a tremendous role in the national economic and social development of the country. In accordance with the long-term plan of the national economic and social development of 13 cities of the circum-Bohai Sea up to 2010, the economy of the circum-Bohai Sea area will witness an even greater development for the time to come.The economic prosperity and social development of the circum-Bohai Sea area is closely linked with the environmental conditions of the Bohai Sea. 20 years since the adoption of the reform and open policy, along with the fast economic development of the circum-Bohai Sea area, the environmental conditions of the Bohai Sea has been drastically deteriorated : serious pollution in the coastal areas and worsened water quality; imbalanced ecological systems and frequent incidences of ecological disasters, such as red tides; the worsened marine ecological environment and the apparent reduction of marine biological species; the damage of typical marine ecological systems and great loss of habitat, as well as serious erosion incurred by habitat damage in the coastal zone.The Chinese government, academic institutions and masses of people are all concerned about the seriousness of the Bohai Sea environment, and the government has taken a series of... |
