Marine is not only an indispensable source of material and energy for human beings survival and social development in the future, but also an important factor that affects ecological balance and global climate change.With the development of science and technology, exploitation and utilization of marine resources have reached a three-dimensional level. Human dependence on marine is increasing. At the same time, marine is having an increasing impact on human activities. The marine environment is complex and changeable, and has frequent dynamic exchange. Studying the various characteristics and laws of marine environment is the crux of further development of marine resources and protection of marine environment rationally.Along with the exploitation and utilization of marine resources deeply in China, marine environmental monitoring has become an important research topic of marine environment protection. For a long time, marine environmental monitoring and survey have accumulated a large number of multi-source, multi-dimensional, dynamic and heterogeneous marine environmental data. Using marine GIS to manage and visualize the marine environmental data to seek the law of marine phenomenon has become research trends in recent years.This paper analyzes the recent study of marine GIS, focused on the marine environmental data, designs a service-oriented spatio-temporal data model. Combined with GIS services technology, develops a virtual marine environment visualization service system. The data model, visualizing expression, sharing and interoperability and other respects of researches introduce new elements into marine GIS. This paper mainly includes five aspects:(1) Discusses the marine environment spatio-temporal data modeling and visualization services technology and methods includes:GIS data sharing and interoperability technology, GIS services framework system and the marine environment visualization methods. Combining the marine GIS and GIS services, the following issues need to be addressed:organizationing the service-oriented marine environment spatio-temporal data; establishing a reasonable and efficient marine environment scene and environmental parameters visual model; proposing a kind of service-oriented framework system for visualization.(2) On the basis of analyzing of the marine environment spatio-temporal data characteristics and the existing data model, proposes a conceptual model for marine environment data based on the feature and field to achieve integration of descripting and expressing of feature, field, time, space and semantic domains. Designs and implements the service-oriented marine environment data organization and storage using GML.(3) Studies on the virtual marine environment visual modeling methods, and presents dynamic simulation of marine sky, wave simulation based on Gerstner-Rankine model, contour-based construction of water body and optimization algorithm for the seabed terrain modeling methods. The typical elements of the marine environment modeling is given, such as air-sea CO2 flux, marine surface wind field and marine temperature, dynamic simulation through visualization achieves the marine phenomenon visual expression.(4) Aiming at the current status and exiting problems of marine environment visualization, proposes new patterns of service-oriented visualization and integration of multi-level visualization service, structures service-oriented marine environmental data visualization and sharing framework to realize the creation, invocation and organization of three-dimensional dynamic GIS services, and discusses and implements the classification and description of marine environment GIS services resources and metadata management.(5) Based on the theories, techniques and methods, establishes a prototype system to realize an integrated marine environment visualization service of the marine sky, surface (wave), water body, seabed terrain and multi-element integration of the marine environment, provides marine environmental data access, integration, display, query, analysis and other functions.The research shows that the design of the marine environment spatio-temporal data model of this paper can express the exiting multi-source, multi-dimensional, dynamic marine spatio-temporal data, and can adapt to the needs of service-oriented architecture. The independent virtual marine environment visualization services prototype system achieves widely sharing and visualization of marine environmental data.
