Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of nutrition literacy and take-out food consumption, and to analyze the association between nutrition literacy and take-out food consumption among college students, providing an evidence for targeted intervention strategies of nutrition education. Methods In this study, college students were selected from medical and non-medical universities in Bengbu by the stratified cluster sampling method. The questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data from May to June 2021.Among a total of 2 200 questionnaires distributed,2 190 were recovered, with 2 132 valid questionnaires;the effective recovery rate was 96.91%.The self-designed questionnaire was used to investigate the demographic characteristics and take-out food consumption of college students, and the Adult Nutrition Literacy Evaluation Scale was used to evaluate the nutritional literacy level of college students.SPSS 25.0 was used to process data for statistical analysis.Chi-square test was used for comparing inter-group difference, and ordinal multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between nutrition literacy and take-out consumption among college students. Results A total of 2,132 college students were included in the study,734(34.4%)were male, and 1398(65.6%)were female;1128(52.9%)were non-medical,and1004(47.1%)were medical;594(27.9%)were freshman,473(22.2%)were sophomore,493(23.1%)were junior,572(26.8%)were senior;the average age was 21.64±1.6years old.The overall nutritional literacy level of college students was higher in medical major, higher grade, urban, only child, higher educational level of parents, better academic score of last semester, higher average monthly income of family and higher monthly living expenses.80.7% of students consumed take-out food in the past month with the frequency of the take-out food consumption ranging from 1-3 times per week(37.3%)and ≥4 times per week(23.9%),while only 19.3% of students did not consume in the past month.Among the students who bought take-out food in the past month,58.9% of the students didn’t pay attention to the total energy intake,and41.2% of the students didn’t pay attention to the balanced nutrition. The proportion of the students who occasionally or often chose high-salt,high-oil,and high-sugar take-out food was 43.8% and 10.1%,respectively.After adjusting for confounding factors,Logistic regression analysis showed that compared with in nutrition literacy Q1 group, takeaway food consumption frequency in group Q4 with overall nutrition literacy and skill domain nutrition literacy were significantly lower(OR = 0.76,95%CI: 0.60-0.96;OR = 0.73,95%CI: 0.58-0.91),total energy intake of concern were significantly higher(OR =3.19,95%CI: 2.37-4.29;OR = 3.83,95%CI:2.87-0.5.11),attention to nutrition matching were significantly higher(OR = 4.47,95%CI: 3.30-6.04;OR = 5.40,95%CI: 4.03-7.25)and "three high" takeaway food consumption were significantly lower(OR = 0.56,95%CI: 0.43-0.73;OR = 0.53,95%CI: 0.41-0.69);however,the Q4 group in cognitive domain of nutrition literacy had no correlation with takeout food consumption frequency or "three high" takeout food consumption(OR =1.06,95%CI: 0.84-1.33;OR = 1.06,95% CI: 0.82-1.37),and functional nutrition literacy in the Q4 group was not associated with take-out food consumption frequency(OR = 0.84,95%CI: 0.67-1.05).In the cognitive domain, nutrition knowledge nutrition literacy in the Q4 group was not associated with takeout food consumption frequency, concern about total energy intake, concern about nutrition collocation, and "three high" takeout food consumption(OR = 1.19,95%CI: 0.94-1.52;OR = 1.44,95% CI: 0.88-1.46;OR = 1.19,95% CI: 0.93-1.54;OR =0.89,95%CI: 0.71-1.12);understanding nutrition literacy in the Q4 group was also not associated with takeout food consumption frequency and "three high" takeout food consumption(OR =1.19,95%CI: 0.94-1.52;OR = 1.10,95% CI: 0.84-1.44).In the skill domain, the takeout food consumption frequency in the Q4 group with applying skills, interactive skills and critical skills nutrition literacy were significantly lower(OR =0.53,95%CI: 0.42-0.66;OR = 0.66,95% CI: 0.53-0.82;OR = 0.69,95%CI: 0.56-0.85),total energy intake of concern were significantly higher(OR=3.81,95%CI: 2.83-5.11;OR =2.94,95% CI: 2.24-3.86;OR =2.46,95%CI: 1.89-3.18),attention to nutrition matching were significantly higher(OR =5.43,95%CI: 4.01-7.35;OR =3.90,95% CI: 2.96-5.15;OR =2.96,95%CI: 2.28-3.84) and "three high" takeaway food consumption were significantly lower(OR =0.44,95%CI: 0.34-0.57;OR = 0.51,95% CI: 0.40-0.66;OR = 0.71,95% CI: 0.56-0.90);Obtaining skills nutrition literacy in the Q4 group had significantly higher total energy intake(OR =2.21,95%CI: 1.60-3.05),significantly higher attention to nutrition matching(OR =2.81,95%CI: 2.03-3.89)and significantly lower take-out food consumption of "three high"(OR =0.66,95%CI: 0.49-0.89).Conclusion Major-,grade-,urban-and rural-differences were observed in nutritional literacy among college students.Take-out food consumption was widely popular among college students;however,it was upsetting thatthere was ofinsufficient attention to nutritional factors, and more than half of them chose high-salt,high-oil,or high-sugar food.Among college students, the nutrition literacy level was negatively correlated with the consumption frequency of take-out food and the consumption of high-salt,high-oil,or high-sugar food, and was positively correlated with focusing on total energy intake and nutrition, which was mainly reflected in applying skills, interactive skills and critical skills of skills domain. However, nutrition knowledge and understanding were not associated with take-out food consumption frequency and high-salt,high-oil,or high-sugar food consumption.
