| Background:Sensitive skin is a common skin disorder. There were some epidemiological surveys on sensitive skin conducted in different countries including China, and the global prevalence of sensitive skin was reported even reached 36.9%.In recent decades, more and more facial cleaner and skincare products have being introduced to female population; In common clinical practice, the clinical attendees with sensitive facial skin due to exuberant cleaning have been increasing, with the uncomfortable and intolerant experience which gave an unpleasant influence on their daily lives and works. However, there were few studies focused on this area. Objective:To understand the influencing factors and characteristics of sensitive skin in female patients with the application of sensitive scale and questionnaire in female individuals with sensitive skin, and to reveal the correlation between sensitive skin and facial cleaner as well as skincare products, eventually to provide more scientific evidence for preventing females from sensitive skin developing. Methods:A case-control study had been conducted in DR.ZHOU’S COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY INSTITUTE(in Nanjing)during the past 3 years, and patients with sensitive skin(case group)and attendees with non-sensitive skin(control group)were recruited. The participants received sensitive scale measure and filled out the questionnaire under the principle of informed consent.EpiData 3.1 software was used to input the original data.Sensitivity and validity analysis, correlation analysis and differential analysis for sensitive scale were performed, and Chi-square test, binary logistic regression model were used for analysis. Results:A total of 306 subjects were recruited in this study, including 200 subjects in the case group and 106 subjects in the control group. The Cronbach’s alpha value of reliability test of the sensitive scale was 0.86,the KMO value of validity test was 0.85,and the p value of the Bartlett’s test of sphericity was 0.000.There was a significant difference of each variable in the scale between the two groups, and the p value was less than 0.001.The overall sensitivity(10th item)in the scale was significantly related to the remaining 9 items(sting, burning, sensation of heat, tightness, itching, pain, general discomfort, hot flushes, and redness). There was no significant difference in the mean scores of the case group on single-sample t-test(p>0.05)(the test value was the mean initial scores,37/100).The use of deep cleansing products(OR=7.14),face exfoliators(OR=3.08)and frequent use of masks(interval time<7 days)(OR=3.24)were risk factors for the development of sensitive skin.Compared with less or no use of sun cream, using sun cream in every season was a protective factor for sensitive skin(OR=0.06);compared with almost no sun protection(such as umbrella, sunglasses and hat),using them frequently was a protective factor(OR=0.21).The educational level was also a protective factor for sensitive skin.Compared with participants received education at level of high school/technical school and below, those with degrees of university/junior college(OR=0.02)and postgraduate and above(OR=0.00)were the protective factors for sensitive skin. The mean age of onset of sensitive skin in case group in this study was 24.51 ±6.22 years old. Most patients with sensitive skin had a higher frequent use of deep cleansing products and face exfoliators, with the highest proportion of 1-6 times per week(both reaching 60%and above),and more than 60%of the patients had developed sensitive skin symptoms within 1 year after using them.In addition, there were significant differences in the selection of skin care products and beauty items(p<0.05)in the two groups of subjects. Conclusion:There was a high accuracy and specificity of sensitive scale in measuring sensitive skin and sensitive scale played an important role in the identification and diagnosis of sensitive skin.Exuberant cleaning and skincare of the face was the risk factor for sensitive skin in Chinese females, and higher education and adopting sun protection were protective factors. |
