| [Background]Sensitive skin is usually a high degree of skin intolerance,often accompanied by subjective symptoms such as burning,tingling,and itching.The objective signs can be erythema,telangiectasia and scales.Although it does not threaten life and health,it has a negative impact on people’s quality of life and psychology.Most skin care products can relieve sensitive skin irritation and itching to a certain extent and increase skin moisture content,but they have little effect on improving facial erythema and telangiectasia.Therefore,it is very necessary to develop functional skin care products that can effectively reduce erythema and telangiectasia while repairing the skin barrier.[Objective]To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new herbal cream containing angelica root extract in reducing facial erythema and telangiectasia in sensitive skin;to quantify facial erythema in sensitive skin.[method]A double-blind and self-controlled trial was conducted in 35 volunteers with sensitive skin.The test product(A)containing Angelica root and Porphyridium extract was applied to one cheek of the test group,while the control group was applied to the other side of the cheek with the control product Avene Relief Concentrate for Chronic Redness,once in the morning and once in the evening.Volunteers were assessed at 0,14 and 28 days before the start of the trial.The main evaluation indicators included the erythema area ratio reflecting the degree of facial erythema,erythema index(EI),and a*value,transepidermal water loss(TEWL),stratum corneum hydration(SCH),lactic acid sting test(LAST)score.L*value was used as secondary evaluation indicators.At the same time,patients need to score the skin symptoms of burning,erythema,itching,tingling,tightness,and dryness on 0 days,14 days,and 28 days,and score the experience of the two products after the end of the test.[Results]1.significant reduction of facial erythema in sensitive skin volunteers after use of test product A or control product B.The erythema area ratio of one side of the face using test product A decreased from 7.48±9.28%to 3.45±4.47%(P<0.05);the erythema area ratio of one side of the face using control product B decreased from 7.37±9.79%to 3.09±4.64%(P<0.05),and the erythema area both decreased by more than 50%.The erythema index(EI)of one side of the face using test product A decreased from 386.86±62.19 to 240.82±43.33(P<0.001),and the erythema index(EI)of one side of the face using control product B decreased from 385.48±62.20 to 239.36±49.12(P<0.001).In addition,the a*value of one side of the face using test product A decreased from 14.80±1.83 to 11.20±1.52,P<0.001;the a*value of one side of the face using control product B decreased from 14.82±1.90 to 11.54±1.35,P<0.001);2.The use of test product A or control product B significantly improved the epidermal barrier function of sensitive skin.Both Product A and Product B reduced the TEWL values.After 28 days of using these products,the TEWL of one side of the face using test product A decreased from 17.35±5.44 to 6.86±2.40(P<0.001),and the TEWL of one side of the face using control product B decreased from 16.90±5.17 to 6.76±2.68(P<0.001).The level of stratum comeum hydration of one side of the face using test product A increased from 65.77±10.42 to 80.59±6.34;and the level of stratum corneum hydration of one side of the face using control product B increased from 64.91±12.11 to 79.66±6.04 in product B(P<0.001).3.Herbal Cream containing Angelica sinensis and Porphyridium extracts can reduce skin sensitivity.After 28 days of using this product,the LAST score decreased from 4.09±1.04 to 1.46±1.12(P<0.001).the capsaicin test score decreased from 3.81±1.12 to 2.08±1.01(P<0.001).4.After 28 days of use,the volunteers’ subjective scores for erythema,burning,itching,tingling,tightness,and dryness decreased significantly(P<0.05).And the subjective satisfaction score of product A was higher than that of product B(48.57%,20%,respectively,P<0.05).5.The L*value,which represents the brightness of the skin,increased after 28 days of use of the two products.Product A rose from 60.09±3.06 to 63.13±2.57,and product B rose from 60.71±2.67 to 63.34±2.43(P<0.001).6.The VISIA red area images were segmented using image segmentation and color space principle techniques.The erythema area was segmented,and the erythema area ratio could be obtained by the ratio of the pixels in the erythema area to the total number of rectangular box pixels.This method could quantify the erythema area of sensitive skin and could be clinically used for the evaluation of erythema efficacy.[Conclusions]1.New functional skin care products containing Angelica sinensis and Porphyridium can improve facial erythema and telangiectasia of sensitive skin;at the same time,it can repair the skin barrier;2.The erythema area of sensitive skin can be quantified with image segmentation and color space principle techniques. |
