Objective: To evaluate the mental and health conditions in the epilepsy children with oxcarbazepine(OXC) monotherapy, and provide theoretical basis for clinical psychological intervention. Methods: There were 39 children with epilepsy which were newly-diagnosed, and 40 healthy children in normal control group. The mental conditions of the children were evaluated by the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders(SCARED), the Depression Self-rating Scale for Children(DSRSC) and the health conditions were evaluated by the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Measurement Models(Peds QL). The influencing factors were retrospective analyzed by collecting related information. Results: 1. There comparison in the epilepsy children’s emotion condition with OXC monotherapy: The total score of SCARED was 19.10±6.97, and the score of DSRSC was 11.67±4.95, both of them were higher than the normal control group which scores were 13.95±6.17 and 8.82±3.54 seperately. The anxiety subscales showed that the children with epilepsy had the higher scores before treatment than the normal control group(P<0.05). The scores of SCARED and DSRSC showed 17.97±5.2 and 10.77±3.85 after treatment, which were also higher than the normal control group(P<0.05), especially in the subscale of the school phobia. There were no significant difference(P>0.05) in the scores of the SCARED, DSRSC and the the anxiety subscales between before and after OXC treatment. 2. The control study about the effect of OXC monotherapy on the epilepsy children’s quality of life: Compare to the normal control(86.73±5.27), the children with epilepsy had lower scores in Peds QL before and after OXC monotherapy, which were 79.65±7.51 and 83.13±5.53 respectively(P<0.05). The children with epilepsy had the lower quality of life, mainly in physical function, emotional function and social function(P<0.05). And the results showed there were no significant between the groups before and after OXC monotherapy(P>0.05). 3. The analysis of scores between the emotion and quality of life in the epilepsy children: The scores of SCARED, DSRSC and the anxiety subscales were significantly negatively correlated with the total scores of Peds QL(P<0.05). The higher scores in SCARED and DSRSC, the lower in the scores in Peds QL.4. Exploring the factors associated with the quality of life in the epilepsy children: the result showed that the family economy, peer relationship, children’s age and courses of the disease had effects on the quality of life(P< 0.05). After the multiple stepwise regression analysis, only the course of disease, SCARED scores, DSRSC scores and the peer interaction were closely related with the quality of life(P< 0.05). The more anxiety and depression, longer course of epilepsy and the worse peer interaction may leaded to the lower quality of life. Conclusions: Children with epilepsy may have obvious psychological and emotional disorders, mainly in somatizationl/panic disorder, generalized anxiety, separation anxiety, social phobia and school phobia, especially in the school phobia, which may increase the risk of suffering from anxiety, depression and lower the quality of life compare to the healthy children. The epilepsy children also had lower quality of life, mainly in physical function, emotional function and social function. The emotional disorders were negatively correlated to the quality of life in the epilepsy children. OXC monotherapy had little effect on the emotion of children with epilepsy. Clinicians should consider the effects of seizures and drug treatment on mental behavior of children with epilepsy and correct the children’s physcologic disorders in time, so as to improve comprehensively the quality of life in the children with epilepsy.
