A Study On Application Of Tracer Methodology In Handover Procedure For Operation Patients

ObjectivesIn this paper, we aimed to identify the deficiency in the process of handover surgical patients, based on tracking the handover sheets of the procedure of transferring surgical patients. In the transferring process, and we tried to collect data to improve the quality of nursing service on handover surgical patients, and to raise up the quality of services on patients’safety as well as ensure a smooth procedure of operating procedure undertaken. To assess the efficiency of applied the tracer methodology in optimizing handover procedure of surgical patients as well as improving nursing service to surgical patients.Methods1. To train all the participants who are peri-operating nurses on the tracer methodology through group training method.2. To collect the undesirable incident in the operation room and secondhand resources, and to clarify the division responsibility of each participant from the training groups.3. To conduct a survey to both nurses and surgical patients through a self-design questionnaire, and to give a semi-structural interview to all nurses.4. To select nursing professionals for the consultant under the Delphi method.5. To compare the drawbacks exists in previous handover procedure through setting a control group.Results1. After applied tracer methodology into handovering surgical patients, the rate of adverse events in experimental group was lower than in control group, difference between two groups was significant.2. After improved the procedure of handovering surgical patients, the time length of transferring patients in experimental group was shorter than in control group, difference between two groups was significant.3. After improved the procedure of handovering surgical patients, the completion rate of sugeries in experimental group was higher than in control group, difference between two groups was significant.4. After improved the procedure of handovering surgical patients, the satisfaction rate of operation nurses and patients, as well as the satisfaction rate of surgical nurses to operation nurses in experimental group was higher than in control group, difference between two groups was significant..Conclusion1. The tracer methodology can improve work efficiency of handover surgical patients, cut down the rate of medical incidents, and improve patients’ satisfaction rate.2. the comprehensive competency of healthcare professionals plays a significant role in the application of tracer methodology.3. The tracer methodology is worth to promote in clinical nursing practice based on efficient training among healthcare professionals.
