Objective: To evaluate the effects of self-management of adult patients with epilepsy,then provide theorical and practical basis for self-management of patients with epilepsy.Methods: Select100patients with epilepsy who fit criterions from DemonstrationProjects of rural China in Pingluo, Helan, Yongning, Lingwu counties of Ningxia province.All100patients completed the generally questionnaire for epilepsy with patients, the Qualityof Life in Epilepsy-31(QOLIE-31), Symptom Checklist-90(SCL-90),General Self-EfficacyScale (GSES). The research subjects were randomly divided into two groups: interventiongroup(50cases) and control group(50cases).Control group was given basic knowledgeeducation of epilepsy and intervention group was implemented with self-managementinterventions. We evaluated the quality of life, mental health condition and self-efficacy againafter6months.Results: The results before the self-management intervention were:(1) The score of100adults with epilepsy about quality of life was (47.75±17.66), the score of being anxious aboutseizure was the lowest (39.88±22.53).(2) The total scores of100adult patients with epilepsyabout SCL-90were all lower than that of national norms (p<0.05).(3) The total scores of100adults with epilepsy about general self-efficacy were all lower than that of national norms(p<0.05).The results after the self-management intervention were:(1) The SCL-90scores ofintervention group were lower than the control group (p<0.05); the SCL-90scores ofintervention group were lower than before by itself (p<0.05).(2) The scores about the quality of life, being anxious about seizure, life of satisfaction, emotion and social function ofintervention group were higher than the control group (p<0.05); these scores of interventiongroup were higher than before by itself (p<0.05).(3) The self-efficient scores of interventiongroup were higher than the control group (p<0.05); the self-efficient scores of interventiongroup were higher than before by itself (p<0.05).(4) Most of the patients followed theinterventions and satisfied with the measures.Conclusion:(1) The level of mental condition and self-efficacy in adult patients withepilepsy were low.(2) By learning the self-management measures of epilepsy, the patientsmastered the skills of self-management, the quality of life of the patients have been improvedgreatly.(3) By learning the self-management measures, the patients enhanced the confidenceof conquering disease and mastered self-adjusting mood methods, and the level of mentalhealth was obviously improved.(4) By learning the self-management measures, theself-efficacy of the patients of epilepsy was also obviously improved.
