Rail transport, with the advantage of higher-speed, convenient and lower-cost, is becoming the first choice for transport of dangerous goods. Nowadays with the rapid development of various chemical industries, the demand for rail transport of dangerous goods shows an increasing trend. Because of the lively chemical properties of dangerous goods, the demanding conditions of transport, long transport distance, and lots of uncertainties while in-transit, the necessary of re-grouping operations and so on, all those factors add the risk coefficient for dangerous goods transportation. So by establishing a Railway Dangerous Goods In-Transit Monitoring System (RDGITMS) to get the real-time information about the state of these dangerous goods is really necessary. This system will hugely improve the railway dangerous goods transportation, apparently cut down the incidence of dangerous occurrences for lacking information.So under this background, this system takes advantage of the complementary RFID technology and the wireless sensor networks technology to monitor the dangerous goods status and get the security information of these in-transit goods during the whole transportation process.The main contributions of this paper include:1. Hardware selection. According the system requirement, we choose the hardware that both meet the system need and scalable. Build an experimental platform to test this system.2. Integration of wireless sensor networks with the RFID technology, take advantage of both technology:RFID and the wireless sensor networks. And also take the workflow of dangerous goods transport into condition, we designed this RDGITMS to monitor the whole transport process:the security status of dangerous goods, whether any goods get lost during in-transit, once lost, the controller can know which items got lost, and when and where these goods got lost, all there information helps a lot in finding these goods, what’s more, this system can also report alarms message to prevent these items from being stolen, and make sure they are well kept, temperature, humidity, and etc..Compared with the current system which pay more attention on completing the process of dangerous goods workflow: accept, sign, tracing and delivery by computer, and actually the tracking function is achieved by artificial signed during the way, while we try to tracing these goods automatically all by sensors and RFID tags, and information also reported automatically by the GPRS, and the controller deals with these received information automatically.3. Introduced the detail design of gateway where information fused, designed the control logic, software process flow, as well as the communication effectively guarantee, trouble solving, and the transfer protocol.4. By the form of experimental simulation, we test the performance of the system, and from the obtained data and charts to verify the effect of system integration. The experiments show that the system designs is feasible, complete basic functions; can meet the general requirement of current dangerous goods railway transport monitoring, this system has good scalability and compatibility.
