ObjectiveTo investigate nursing human resources in the pediatric CICU, including the nursing workload and satisfaction rate, to explore the impact of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery intensive care unit human resources allocation on nursing workload and job satisfaction. to provide empirical research data for nursing managers.Methods1. SubjectsThe sample included209children and15nurses of pediatric CICU, from March2011to June2011, the Third Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University.2. MethodsInvestigating the socio-demographic information of pediatric CICU patients and nursing staff, the nursing workload and satisfaction rate were studied using the Nursing Activity Scale (Nursing Activities Score, NAS) and nurse job satisfaction scale respectively, and correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis to identify the impact factors, and find the relationship and impact factors of human resources allocation on nursing workload.3. Statistical methodsThe database were created with Microsoft Excel, statistical analysis were studied by the SPSS17.0software. NAS score were showed as means±standard deviation. Enumeration data showed as rate and ratio. means, standard deviation, the number of cases and the percentage were performed for describing the patient’s general information, general demographic information of nurses and satisfaction scores;χ2, Mann-Whitney U non-parametric rank and test for analysing NAS score; t-test, ANOVA analysis for investigating the influencing factors of nurse job satisfaction; multiple regression analysis for determining the influencing factors of nurse job satisfaction; and Spearman correlation for analysing NAS score and nurse job satisfaction score of each dimension. a=0.05as the test standard.Results1. Comparisons among several index of nursing workloadThe average NAS score of CICU patient was77.70±5.63, the daily care activities score206.92±155.75; according to the highest workload estimates need to be configured the nurse21of CICU; for CICU children, NAS score on the day of arrival and the last day of stay were higher than the score of the next day arrival, with highly statistically significant difference (P<0.01); NAS score of surgery patients was higher than non-surgical patients, with statistically significant difference (P<0.05); congenital heart disease patients had higher scores than other types of diseases, with highly statistically significant difference (P<0.01).2. Scores of nurse job satisfactionSatisfaction total score of CICU nurse was2.85±0.488, it was in moderate level; the highest first three elements are interpersonal relations (3.68±0.539), acceptation and praise (3.63±0.504), achievements and responsibilities (3.41±0.749); sequential elements behind those were:personal and professional development opportunities (3.31±1.775), occupational characteristics (3.12±0.810), management and hospital policies (2.53±0.563), the balance between family and job (2.47±0.731), the scheduling arrangements and working conditions (2.45±0.563), wage and subsidy (2.01±0.456). The professional speciality before participating ICU and the working experiences were demonstrated as influencing factors of job satisfaction for nurses as studied by the multiple regression analysis with statistically significant difference (P <0.05).3. Correlation between nursing workload and job satisfactionWill the NAS score and nurse satisfaction scale of each dimension score for the.The results of Spearman correlation test showed that the NAS score were positively related with acceptation and praise, achievement and responsibility and interpersonal relations (P<0.05); and were negatively related with wages and subsidies, the balance between family and job (P<0.05).ConclusionsThe pediatric CICU nursing workload is correlated with acceptation, praise, achievement and personal relationships in nurse satisfaction scale. Nursing human resources allocation has correlation with nursing workload and satisfaction rate. It can be well allocated with the professional speciality before participating ICU and the working experiences of nurses, the different time of patients admitted into the ICU, whether surgery or not, the different kinds of diseases and interventions targeted at the influencing factors of these, to improve the nursing human resource management.
