Objectives:Apply Nursing Activities score to eveluate the nursing workload of our NCU objectively and accurately. Analyse some factors which influence the nursing workload. These factors may include age, gender, hospitalization days, treatments and Glosgow Coma Score. These will offer data for nursing manager to reveal human resources.Patients and Methods:The nursing workload of 245 patients who were admitted to the NCU of the first hospital attached to Jilin University from January 10, 2009 to March 10, 2009 was selected. The tool we used to assessment the nursing workload was the Chinese version of Nursing Activities score. NAS was explored by Miranda etal and first translated to Chinease by Sha li. Every day we evaluated the nursing workload and GCS of each patient and the total nursing workload of all the patients in our NCU. Factors may related to nursing workload such as gender, age, hospitalization days, treatments and severity of illness were collected and analyzed. And we used SPSS 13.0 sociology statistical software to analyse the relativity between the nursing workload and gender, ages, hospitalization days, treatments and Glosgow Coma Score.Results:1. The average NAS score of each patient in our NCU is 65.7±12.3% per day. That is to say nurses of NCU is bearing overloaded work.2. The nusing workload patients need have significant relationship with hospitalization days. The longer the time is, the more the nusing workload.3. The nusing workload of patients who receive different treatment shows sensible differences. The average daily nusing workload of surgery patients is more than that of non-surgery patients .4. The daily nusing workload is negatively correlated with Glosgow Coma Score. The lower the score is , the more daily cares patients need in hospital.5. The paitents with different gender and age need more or less the same nursing workload. Conclusions:According to this research, nurses in NCU of the first hospital attached to Jilin University is bearing overloaded work, and the nursing workload that patients need is correlated with the severity of illness, hospitalization days and treatments.
