This paper focuses on the architecture study and system design and implementation of NPU FPU (floating point unit), whi ch based on the MIL-STD-1750A. And our study-group finally accomplishes the logical design of the embedded microprocessor chipset. using the advanced HLD (High-Level Design) technique, describing systems of coprocessor with VHDL, the whole system is fully accomplished and verified on the FPGA. The presupposition of system design is the study of floating point arithmetic including data type, basis of numeric value, operational environment and so on. At the same time the key of system design is the analysis of NPU FPU architecture. Based on the analysis of the whole structure and function in the microprocessor , this paper describe elaborately the instruction set ,algorithm .and express several design schemes of the data path and micro_control mechanism , then choose the suitable one , and describe it in detail Finally , this paper presents the process of synthesis and implementation . concerning about optimizing the area and frequency , some technique of the design and coding style of VHDL has been discussed.
