With the higher education stepped into the popularization stage, study in the university through passing the college entrance examination has become the choice of most students, so that the choice of major has become one of the key factors in determining what they will study in the university and maybe even the development direction in the future. But due to the lacking of awareness of self-knowledge and society and the imbalance of information, many students show their blindness in choosing major, which may cause the poor satisfaction to the selected major and the emotion of learning-weariness. In annual surveys of graduate employment market, the phenomenon that career choice doesn’t fit student’s major is also obvious. What’s more, the number of students who changed their majors after entering the university is increasing these years, which is also a kind of educational resources waste. So, choosing a right major is not only good for self-development of students, but also will contribute to the job market.People are social people, which determines we cannot grow without interaction with others, and one’s decision may also be influenced by others in a way. Significant others, refers to the individuals who made some impacts on someone’s actions and choices by influencing his self-conception and social-cognition or by some other means, and these individuals may made different influences on someone. This paper is aiming to study how the students were affected by significant others while they fill in the college entrance will, who is the most significant other, and whether there are any differences in the impacts of different significant others to different background students through the overall analysis and difference analysis.This paper consists of four chapters:The first chapter is the introduction: to expound the background of this thesis, the concepts of significant others and major choice, as well as the current research situation about these two aspects.The second chapter is the research design: to introduce the research methods of this study(includes questionnaire and interview) and the subjects of this study.The third chapter is the results and discussion about this investigation: to make an analysis by overall and difference analysis according to the survey data and to explore the possible reasons of significant others’ influences on students’ major choice with the materials getting from the interview.The fourth chapter is the conclusion and suggestion: to summarise the data analysis of the third chapter and give suggestions to both the schools and families, as well as the students themselves base on the results of the third chapter.According to this research, we obtained the following conclusions about the influences of the significant others to students’ major choice:Firstly, the result of sort of significant others’ influences on students’ major choice is mothers’, fathers’, teachers’, other families’, peers’ and idols’.Secondly, the way of significant others influence on students’ major choice may be through the expectations to the students or daily communication about the social information with students, or by personal charisma, etc.. And the daily communication is the main means.Also, this study draws the conclusion that there do have some differences among different significant others affect on different background students.Finally, combining with the conclusion of this study, aiming at the problem about major choosing of middle school students, suggestions will be given to schools, families, and students as well, hoping that schools or teachers could pay attention to students’ career planning education, collecting and spreading the information on curriculum or employment direction of the majors in university to students. Also, communicating with students’ parents about those information is necessary.
