Water-soluble polymers have been used widely for petroleum recovery, and play an increasingly important and decisive role, but with the depth of the drilling increasing, and the hardness in this process increasing, the application of water-soluble polymers face severe challenges. For this, a new type of hydrophobically associating monomer (MDH)-p-acrylamino-benzyl benz-ammonia ester-was devised and synthesized based on the isocyanate which is the main material of the polyurethane, acrylic acid and the advanced aliphatic alcohol as the materials. And based on the NaHSO3/MnSO4 as the initiators, hydrophobically associating water-soluble polymers with benzol groups and long chain alkyl in side chain radical AM/MDH have been synthesized in aqueous solution by free-radical micelle copolymerization based on the hydrophobically associating monomer MDH and AM as the materials. And Infrared Spectra testified the structure of the monomer and the polymer. The effect of viscosity increasing of copolymer solution with different hydrophobic group in different surfactant was studied. The results obtained show that the copolymers with the number of carbon atom in hydrophobic group n=8 and using dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid sodium salt behavior excellent property of viscosity increasing. In addition, the reaction conditions are optimized through orthogonal design. The results show the optimal conditions are as followed: the concentration of AM is 10-15%, the feed of initiator, hydrophobic monomer and surfactant are 0.2%, 0.5mol%, 0.75% relative to the AM feed, respectively. The viscosity increment of the dilute aqueous solution with salt of the new type hydrophobically associating polymer was studied. Theinfluences of temperature and pH effect were also tested. The interaction between the polymer and the surfactant in the solution was analyzed. Finally, the influence of shear rate to reduced viscosity of the hydrophobically associating polymer's solution was preliminary studied. The experiments in the paper show that AM/MDH hydrophobically associating polymer does behavior good abilities of visco-increasing and salt resistance, with a significant applying prospecting.
