Up to now, most polymers applied in oil and gas production have some problems when used in high temperature or high salinity reservoirs. So the design and polymerization of novel polymers, which have the ability of both temperature tolerance and salt resistance, becomes the object of this paper.According to analysis of the mechanisms of temperature tolerance and salt resistance polymers applied in oil and gas production, a new molecular design theory was brought forward, that is by improving the efficiency of the hydrophobical content of the polymer, its aqueous solution ability of resisting temperature and salt could be enhanced observably. In the direction of this theory, a new nonionic hydrophobical monomer, which is not reported in literatures, was designed. This monomer ANPE (Allyl-(4-Nonyl) Phenyl Ether) and another nonionic monomer APE (Allyl Phenyl Ether) and synthesized through phase transfer catalyzing method. IR and UV spectrum were used to characterize these two monomers. The polymerization conditions were studied. Firstly, four different free radical initiating system used in micellar copolymerization and their effect on products, such as molecular weight, conversion of ANPE and ability of resisting temperature and salt, were compared and a novel hydrophobically associating copolymer (ANPE-HAWP) composed of acrylamide (AM), crylic acid (AA) and a low amount of ANPE was prepared using complex initiation system. IR and UV spectrum were used to characterize the terpolymer. After conditions for copolymer, such as pH, reaction time, reaction temperature, amount of initiator of polymerization, the total monomer concentration, feed composition and so on were studied, a suitable polymerization conditions for ANPE-HAWP were determined. As far as the solution properties of ANPE-HAWP were concerned, monomer ANPE and its composition in copolymer as well as other monomers that were considered to enhance the ability of resisting temperature and salt were studied. The results show that all these factors influence the properties of copolymer severely. Apparent viscosities at different shear rate were studied and the properties of dissolution and stabilization were evaluated simply. After ability of resisting temperature and salt in ANPE-HAWP solution were studied, some new ideas about hydrophobical association and hydrophobically associating water-soluble polymer (HAWP) were put forward. By defining and using some new concepts, such as hydrophobical attraction, hydrophobically associating energy and active hydrophobical content, the relationship between hydrophobical association and the properties in HAWP solution and the mechanism of resisting temperature and salt in HAWP solution were discussed.
