Being a city carrier, urban land is involved in the production and daily life of people as the most basic natural resources and the most important production factors, and it is closely related to various human activities. Now, with China's accelerating urbanization process, urban development mainly depends on an expansion mode, as the city scale enlarges day by day, and expanding rate of urbanization is slower than that of the city scale. Problems still exist in urban land use such as the irrational land structure and the extensive management, which lead to the unreasonable allocation of land resources, and the inefficient use of urban land. Thus the intensive use of land is the key to solving the problem.Based on empirical analysis of land use in Urumqi City, comprehensively considering the effect of social, economic, resources and environment systems toward intensive use of land in Urumqi city, using the pressure– state– response(PSR)model as a guide, establish an evaluation index system of urban land use in Urumqi, the author then uses the principal component analysis(PCA)to comprehensively evaluate the intensive use of urban land in Urumqi during the years 1999 to 2007, making further efforts on partition evaluation of all administrative districts of Urumqi in 2008. Evaluation results indicate that the current land use in Urumqi remains at a relatively intensive level. In 2008, the status of land intensive use in administrative districts of Urumqi polarized, among which, land use in Tianshan and the Xinshi district are excessive, land use in Shayibake district is basic intensive use, while all the other districts tend to be extensive use. Finally, according to the above intensive land use analysis and evaluation of Urumqi, the author gives solutions and recommendations to suit local conditions, thus providing reference to the rational and intensive use of urban land in Urumqi.
