Analysis Of The Interruption By Talk Show Host

Interruption is a common and special phenomenon in conversations. In talk show, the hosts often use interruptions to disrupt the honored guests'utterance. This speech act seems not to conform to the general politeness principle and the cooperation principle. In fact it's the speech strategy used for the program effect or the timing control. Based on the conversation analysis theory, this article analyze the corpus from several talk show programs including "Dating with Lu Yu", "Brain Storm", "Boss Town", "Tell It as It is" and so on. Firstly, the interruption in talk show is compared with that in spoken language to find their differences. Secondly, according to analyzing the way, the pattern, the function, as well as the location of the interruption by talk show host, the major function and the best mode of the host's interruption is discovered. Thirdly, the comparison to the different style hosts'interruptions is carried on to seek for the relationship between the style and the interruption. Finally, a pragmatic study of the interruption phenomenon is carried on. All this paper is trying to fully analyze the interruption by talk show host so as to provide some technical and theory support to the related language practice.
