ObjectiveThe coming of information explosion promoted the emerging of information visualization, which was regarded as a new scientific field. Recently, a hot topic was that information visualization combined with bibliometrics to map knowledge domains. Histcite and Citespace were often used to visualize some subjects. Our aim was to find out which was easily to use and to compare the map they produced and to summarize the advantages and disadvantages for the sake of exerting their advantages in the later study and offering references for our national softwares development. Simultaneously, we also aimed to find out the front topic evolution in the field of human embryonic stem cell.Materials and methodHuman embryonic stem cell related documents were downloaded from web of science, then were input into Histcite and Citespace separately. For Histcite, the collection was analysed according to their publication years, source journals, authors and topics. After that, we made historiograph through selecting LCS top 65, and output.net file, which was input into pajek to make the main path of human embryonic stem cell field. For the Citespace,(1)to make co-citation analysis:set the threshold as (6,5,22) (22,12,25) (28,14,32) and select time span, node type, term source, term selection and so on, then click the "go" button; (2)for the map of evolution of the fronts, the threshold was set as (4,4,8) (18,10,10) (24,12,12), then selected "pathfinder" "visualization-static", "visualization-merged" and "visualization per sliced year". We selected "spotlight" and "timezone" to control the merged network.ResultsFor Histcite we could get the summary about human embryonic stem cell documents (publication years, journals, authors, authors'institutes and most frequently cited references) and its topic words distribution. Then we also got the historiograph and its main path graph. For Citespace, we obtained co-cited cluster network which included 10 pivotal nodes and achieved 8 merged networks of the burst term, one of which totally reflected bursting profile of every slice. At the same time, we also attained the spotlight and timezone control graphs of the merged network.ConclusionHistcite had advantages as followings:firstly, its interface was concise and conveniently to use; secondly, it could produce many bibliometrics data of selected fields alleviating the heavy statistical work; Secondly, its historiograph to some extent could show the relationship between documents; thirdly, the main path graph could display annual important literatures of the selected field.Citespace had advantages as followings:firstly, the data imported could be from many database; secondly, there were some kinds of parameter setting solutions; thirdly, the user could simplify the networks; fourthly, it could produce colorful networks, which contained pivotal nodes and easily to be understood; fifthly, the user could interact with it; lastly, it could produce many kinds of co-citation and co-ocurrence networks, and the burst term co-occurrence networks could describe the evolution of the scientific field. Furthermore, the pivotal nodes in networks made researchers simplify the analysis of the networks focusing on the pivotal nodes. The evolution of the fronts in human embryonic stem cell field was summarized as followings:during 1990-1997, they were related to embryonic separation, cultivation, establishing cell lines, differential inhibition, embryonic development and gene expression; during 1998-2005, the fronts were huamn embryonic stem cells multipotent, gene expression, induced differentiation, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine; during 2008-2009, the fronts were induced pluripotent stem cell, regenerative medicine and therapy application.
