The present paper takes 693 pieces of thesis published between 2001 and 2005 from 13 key domestic PE (physical education) periodicals as the research objects, which include Journal of Beijing University of Physical Education, Journal of Tianjin Sport University, Sports Science, Physical Education and Science, etc. With literature metrology as the methodology, it aims to carry on analysis from the perspective of their quotations, research methodology, author, content and so on. It digs into the primary features and rules, displays the literature with significant influence and then points out the existing problems and development trend, thus laying theoretical foundation for the research development of martial arts. Through this research, we can find that the number of literature on martial arts has been increasing year by year, with obvious variation in different regions and time frames. Papers on martial arts have made extensive use of the research methods of modern PE science. While there have been more papers that involve comprehensive research methods, single method still takes the lion's share. Young and middle-aged PE teachers with masters'degree and lecturer title from PE specialized academies are the backbone of academic studies. Besides, there is a shortage of key and influential experts in this field. Speaking of the researchers'understanding of information, there is still much to be desired. In addition, literature from abroad is less quoted, which reveals a weakness in using foreign information. In general, the papers concerned are frequently quoted in the fourth year of their publication. There's a lack of creativity and innovation in the way they're quoted. As for the nature of these theses, research of social science outnumbers that of natural science; descriptive studies are more than that of an explanatory nature; there's more coverage of basic studies than applied ones. Periodicals with primary influence include in the ranking of importance Journal of Beijing University of Physical Education, China Sport Science and Technology, Journal of Shanghai University of Physical Education, etc. Introduction to Martial Arts, Shadowboxing, China's History of Martial Arts count as the most influential literature in this respect. The most recognizable researchers are in turn Zhao Shuangjin, Qiu Pixiang, Zhou Weiliang, etc. This study indicates that researchers of martial arts prefer the traditional macroscopical, holistic and logical ways of thinking. All in all, the key for future research is to capitalize upon modern scientific research methods, so as to dig deeper into the academic research. In order to enhance researches on martial arts, we need to upgrade researchers'foreign language skills and promote cooperation with other disciplines as well.
