With the ever boosting need for processing speed and bandwidth of high performance computer system, the brand new optical interconnect technology has great advantages, such as high bandwidth, excellent anti-jamming ability and high interconnect density and low power consumption, therefore it is potential to solve the ubiquitous problems of communications bottleneck. Optical interconnect technology is vital and surely a trend in the field of HPC interconnect technology.Firstly the thesis introduces the history and actuality of optical interconnect technologies, HPC networks and WDM optical networks, and summarizes optical interconnect systems, and then the need of HPC networks and their trend is put forward. Based on the research above, by abstracting the B&S structure, the thesis bring forward a structure of optical interconnection switching called WDMSR, which has potential to expand bandwidth, good retractility, and would meet the network in HPC very well. Base on the characteristic of WDMSR and the switching method in use, the switching strategy and the control protocol are researched. Due to the restrict that most 32 nodes can be used in WDMSR and cannot meet large scale interconnection for HPC, refer to the WDM Dual-Ring network and the 2D-Torus structure, a unit called WSRNet which based on WDMSR is put forward, and then its chain structure, 2D structure and 3D structure are advanced. Then the scheme of the high system retractility is pointed out and the routing strategies of this network are researched.The theory analysis and experiment result indicates that the WDMSR which using Burst Switching has a rapid response and a good real time. Because controlling message and transmitting message are parallel running and the control data packet is very shortness, the 1 bit transmission latency is very little that its average value is no greater than 1us in the situation of midding load. The WSRNet constituted of WDMSR inherits its excellence and its 1 bit transmission latency even could reach to a single WDMSR level.Finally, we have designed and implemented an optical interconnection backboard system based on B&S, and the thesis has participated in the collective logic designing and implemented the technics of ODB and the flow control protocol of FPGA, and then analyses the performance of this system.
