Objective: To describe and analyze the mortality trends of malignant tumors in Feicheng from 1998 to 2006, and to provide basic information for the prevention and treatment of malignant tumors in the area. Methods: The death data of malignant tumors which came from Feicheng Cancer Registry during 1998-2006 was coded according to ICD-10. Cancer mortality rate, standard mortality rate, age-specific mortality rate, death composition, sex ratio, potential years of life lost(PYLL), standard potential years of life lost(SPYLL), average years of life lost(AYLL) and other statistic indexes were calculated and analyzed.Results:1. Totally 12138 (male 7838, female 4300) death cases were reported in Feicheng from 1998 to 2006.2. Averagely, the crude mortality rate was 177.31 per 100 000(228.43 per 100 000 in males and 125.94 per 100 000 in females), the standard mortality rate was 143.21 per 100 000(192.75 per 100 000 in males and 97.63 per 100 000 in females). The mortality rates of males were higher than the females'. Crude rate and standard rate for cancer mortality both increased greatly during the nine years.3. The top ten mortality rate of malignant tumors were esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, brain and nervous system cancer, breast cancer, leukemia, larynx cancer, and pancreatic cancer in turn. In the last 9 years, the mortality rate of lung cancer, colorectal cancer and breast cancer had increased sharply, however, descending trends were observed in gastric cancer, brain and nervous system cancer, leukemia and larynx cancer.4. The mean age of malignant tumors mortality was 64.27 years old (63.29 years old in males and 66.03 years old in females) in Feicheng, 1998-2006. Female's mean age was older than male's. With the age growing elder, cancer mortality rate increased. The age of death cases was mainly over 45 years old which occupied 93.90 percent of deaths. The peak age-specific rate of cancer mortality was observed in the age group 75-79, in which mortality rate was 1227.52 per 100 000.5. There were different kinds of cancers in different age groups: Mortality rate in 0-14 years group was 2.68 per 100 000. Leukemia ranked first, 48.72 percent among this group. Mortality rate in 15-44 years group was 21.63 per 100 000. Liver cancer was the leading cause of cancer death, representing 19.69 percent. For 45-64 years group, mortality rate was 317.89 per 100 000. Esophageal cancer was leading death cause, accounted for 34.49 percent. For over 65 years group, mortality rate was 1031.91 per 100 000. Esophageal cancer still ranked first, occupied 42.36 percent.6. The sex ratio was 1.82:1. For most cancer, mortality rate of males was higher than that of females, except for breast cancer and colorectal cancer. The sex ratio ranged between 1.13 and 3.71:1. The sex ratio reached acme in the year 2000, and then had a decline trend.7. During 1998 to 2006, the PYLL of malignant tumors in Feicheng was 57826 person-year, PYLL rate was 8.45 per 1 000, SPYLL was 58594.39 person-year, SPYLL rate was 8.56 per 1 000, AYLL was 4.76 years. Conclusions: During 1998 to 2006, the crude mortality rate of malignant tumors is 177.31 per 100 000, the standard mortality rate is 143.21 per 100 000 in Feicheng. These rates are significantly higher than those of the national average and Shandong Province's average. The mortality rate and life reduction indexes of males are higher than those of females. Malignant tumors threaten to the health of males more seriously than that to the females. The mortality rate of digestive malignant tumor has been very high for 9 years. Therefore, the digestive malignant tumor should be the focus on malignant tumors monitoring and controlling, it also should be the main direction of cancer prevention and control in Feicheng. The aged is by all means the risk group of cancer death, therefore the health- care of the old should be reinforced.
