OBJECTIVES:To evaluate the therapatic effects of the electroacupuncture stimulation of The point of baliao for treatment for overactive bladder syndrome by observating the voiding diary, the patients' quality of life, the pad test and the urodynamic testing befor and after the clinical treatment.METHODS:This was a randomized controlled trial.57 patients entered into our study. The age were range from 18 to 85(53.23±14.64).They were divided into three groups randomly:A(n=21), B(n=18),C(n=18).Patients in group A were treated with electroacupuncture stimulation of Shangliao(BL 31),Ciliao(BL 32),Zhongliao(BL 33),Xialiao(BL 34) for 20 minutes.Patients in group B were treated with electroacupuncture stimulation of Sanyinjiao(SP 6),Weiyang (BL 39),Pangguangshu(BL 28),Zhongji(RN 3),Guanyuan(RN 4) for 20 minutes. And patients in group C were treated with acupuncture of Sanyinjiao(SP 6),Weiyang(BL 39), Pangguangshu(BL 28),Zhongji(RN 3),Guanyuan(RN 4) for 20 minutes. They completed a 3-day voiding diary, the urinary distress inventory, incontinence impact questionnaire, validated quality-of-life inventories, the pad test, and the urodynamic testing before and after 4 weeks' acupuncture treatments. The clinical effects of different groups were evaluated by frequency, urgency, incontinent episodes, dysurea, first sensation, first urge, bladder capacity, voided volume, quality of-life,and lower urinary tract symptoms before and after 4 weeks acupuncture treatments.RESULTS:All patients completed all aspects of the study. The symptom of urinary incontinence significantly improved after treatment in all of groups. There were no significant difference among groups(55.91%for group A,56.71%for group B,52.50%for group C,P>0.05).In group A urinary frequency decreased by 24.94%,urgency improved by 38.14%,voided volume increased in 33.51%,dysurea decreased by 40.05%,first sensation increased in 32.24%,first urge increased in 29.67%,maximum cystometric capacity increased in 33.02%, urinary distress inventory scores decreased by 70.01%,incontinence impact questionnaire scores decreased by 73.09%.In group B urinary frequency decreased by 19.36%,urgency improved by 33.66%,voided volume increased in 21.25%,dysurea decreased by 27.89%,first sensation increased in 19.40%,first urge increased in 20.14%,maximum cystometric capacity increased in 20.82%,urinary distress inventory scores decreased by 57.84%,incontinence impact questionnaire scores decreased by 59.38%.In group C urinary frequency decreased by 15.41%,urgency improved by 33.56%,voided volume increased in 15.21%,dysurea decreased by 24.31%,first sensation increased in 19.71%,first urge increased in17.36%, maximum cystometric capacity increased in 14.37%,urinary distress inventory scores decreased by 54.65%,incontinence impact questionnaire scores decreased by 53.73%.CONCLUSIONS:All symotoms improved significantly in all of groups(P<0.01).The clinical effects of the treatment and the patients' quality of life had significantly improved in three groups, while the electroacupuncture stimulation of The point of baliao for is superior to other groups(P<0.05).
