ObjectiveTo develop a Chinese version scale of health education competence for nurses with good reliability and validity,in order to provide an objective evidence for assessing the competence of health education of nurses.MethodsThe theory construction was put forward on the basis of the knowledge of practice and theory of health education.the original inventory was established by reviewing literature and consulting experts.Then the inventory was evaluated by a panel of 5 experts.The inventory contained 52 items,which were classified into 4 dimensions according to similar qualifies:assessing patients' needs for health education, planning effective health education,implementing health education and evaluating effectiveness of health education.306 nurses in the 1st and Shengjing affiliated hospital of China Medical University were selected to answer the questionnaire.All quantitative data of questionnaire survey was analyzed by SPSS13.0 for testing its reliability and validity of the scale,analyzing the items in the scale was based on comprehensive consideration with discrimination,disperse trend,correlation analysis and factor analysis.After items analysis we got final version of heath education competence scale which was consist of 38 items.Then we tested the reliability and the validity of the scale.The reliability analysis included Cronbach's Alpha coefficient and split-scale reliability.The validity analysis included content,construct validity.Results 1,Item analysisBy comprehensive items analysis,14 items were deleted,38 items were retained.2,Reliability of the scaleWe tested the internal consistency including Cronbach's Alpha coefficient and the split-scale reliability coefficient.Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of the overall scale was 0.949,while the 4 dimensions were 0.762~0.856;the split-scale reliability coefficient of the whole scale was0.935,4 dimension were 0.701~0.859.We concluded the internal consistency reliability was satisfying.2,Validity of the scaleThe content validity index(CVI)for the overall scale was 0.90 and for each dimension was 0.84~0.97.The correlation analysis indicated that the structure of the scale was excellent.The result of factor analysis was also good.With the method of principle components,4 factors were extracted on the standard that eigenvalues is over 1 and the cumulative variance was 41.980%.Loading for each factor was over 0.4.The result indicated that the structure of the scale was similar to the theory construction. The scale also had separating capability.ConclusionsThe scale in this study showed excellent reliability and validity and was an appropriate measure instrument that can be used to assessing the health education competence of nurses.
