Objective To describe the Epidemiological characteristics and economic burden of non-fatal injuries among the inhabitants aged over 18 years in Guangdong province, and explore probable risk factors so as to provide evidence for the control of injuries. Methods The study sample was got by multi-stage randomized sampling, and the injury information of the inhabitants aged over 18 years in Guangdong province was collected by questionnaire. Logistic regression models were used to analyze the influencing factors of injuries and direct expenditure.Results1. A random sample of 10,969 inhabitants aged over 18 years in Guangdong Province were surveyed.17.2% inhabitants were injured during the preceding year. The age-standardized rate(population of Guangdong Province in 2000) was 17. 3%, 14. 4% injured inhabitants were injured 2 times and over.2.Cut(6.0%), strain(3. 4), fall(3. 2%), concussion(2. 0%) and traffic acci-dents(l. 7%) were major causes of injuries. There was no significant difference in the incidence rate between male and female(x~2=3.1, P=0.080). There was a significant different in the incidence rate of different areas( X~2=296. 8, P=0. 000), the incidence rate of village was higher than that of city. The aged often suffered from fall and the young often suffered from traffic accidents. Home, road and farm were major places for injuries. Male, having safe behavior and character between introversion and extroversion were protecting factors for injuries. Group 40-,group 50-, group 60-, group 80-, middling city, I type village, II type village, having difficult to get along with others and unharmonious family were the risk factors.3. Injuries resulted in serious direct economic burden and productivity loss. The expenditure of traffic accidents and that in aged over 70 years was serious. Male, group 70 years, group 80 years, family population from 4 to 6 and family population over 7 were risk factors of direct economic burden,II type village was protecting factor. Conclusion The incidence rate of injuries in inhabitants aged over 18 years in Guangdong province was higher, and the economic burden of injuries was enormous. Injury has been one of the serious public health problems. It was necessary to develop special subject study in groups with high risk.
