Objective To investigate the epidemiology characteristics of spinal cord injury( SCI).Methods 859 patients with SCI between 2009 and 2014 were reviewed to statistically analyze their epidemiologic characteristics in Suzhou. Results Males exceeded females in number in the all age groups. The age of all the patients with SCI was mainly focused at 40~49 years. Fall from height were the main injury causes, followed by traffic accidents, 27.0% and 19.4% respectively. Fall from height and traffic accidents were the main injury causes in the age group below 60 years old, where Lumbar disc herniation was the main injury cause in the age group above 60 years old. Fall from height and traffic accidents were the main injury causes in males, which accounted for 32.5%(197/607)and 20.4%(124/607)respectively,where myelitis and traffic accidents were the main injury causes in females which accounted for 23.0%(58/252)and 17.1%(43/252) respectively. The most frequent affected segment of SCI was cervical segments(43.2%),followed by thoracolumbar(33.9%).There was no significant difference between thoracic segment(11.5%), and the lumbosacral segment(11.4%).According to the American Spinal Injury Association(ASIA) scale, was grade A(19.4%,167/859),B(5.2%,45/859),C(31.5%,(271/859),D(39.6%,340/859)and E(4.2%,36/859).The most frequent complication of SCI were: urinary tract infection, pressure sore and lung infection. Conclusions Prevention and treatment methods should be designed according to the special opidemiologic characteristics. Objective To investigate possible risk factors of early complications in spinal cord injury. Methods Clinical information of 859 patients with SCI was analyzed retrospectively.Related factors for complications in patients with SCI were analyzed, including gender, age, level of injury, segment of injury, surgery and corticosteroids used.Using single factor analysis, all statistical significant factors(P<0.05) were included into unconditioned logistic regression.A back conditional method was used. Results The incidence of early complications was 33.2%(247 males,39 females, mean 49.7 years).Early complications were urinary tract infection in 110 cases(38.4 %),respiratory complication in 61 cases(21.3 %),electrolyte disorders in 11 cases(3.8%), deep vein thrombosis in 22 cases(7.6%),cardiovascular system complication in 25 cases(8.7%),digestive system complication in 23 cases(8.0%). Logistic regression model shows: age, level of injury and segment of injury were risk factors for complications.Conclutions Age,level of injury and segment of injury were risk factors for complications,to do a good job of prevention complication, to promote the recovery of patients in SCI.
